Wonder where they got the Giant decals to put on the fork, frame and (!) fuel tank...

That does look like a death trap.

My uncle sees one near where he lives, it's the unprotected chain that gives me the safety willies.

Oh, and see the drive sprocket? How do you think that mounts to the wheel? Special hub is part of the kit maybe? Nope. Little clamps to bolt it to the spokes. 🤯

Sam Pilgrim was trashing and flipping one like that, with much, much crappier frame in quite a few of his videos.

So if he can flip it you will be just fine 😀

Cheers!
I.

I like the backl brake cable routed under the tank, to gradually wear way through the top quality chinese stamped steel till it leaks.

I've seen a few of these near me, too (Bristol and South Wales).

Generally based on a not-brilliant bike, not that that makes a whole lot of difference!

We sometimes get people bringing them into the shop for servicing.

I won't even change an inner tube as we aren't insured to work on motorbikes.

Some folk have got very unhappy when I have told them they are riding an untaxed, uninsured moped and they need the appropriate licence and helmet.

One even argued with the police officer outside who told him the same thing.

There were a couple of these razzing along the canal towpath near me a few weeks ago. In the dark, no lights, no care for anyone around them. Prize winning throbbers. I kind of wished they had ended up in the canal with their stupid machines.

I haven't seen anyone trying this conversion on a road bike

I love how close the exhaust pipe is to the crank, that's gonna warm your calf up quite nicely.

Bet it freewheels well too.

That's really feggin' scary

Saw one of these while Audaxing in very rural Suffolk. Presumably chances of encountering plod make it a worthwhile risk (for them, I wouldn't!).

One on our local facebook. The seller comments "needs a chain to start it and bike has no brakes." :-0

I’d actually enjoy seeing that tbh.
Poor canal though.

presumably there is a clutch of some sort just above the left crank arm, or it would never stop, and not move at all with the engine off. is it a slipper/auto clutch or a hand controlled thing?

Some kind of simple centrifugal arrangement I’m guessing...

This on the other hand looks much civilized:
