I am finally upgrading to 10 speed from 8 speed.
Will the 10 speed cassette fit onto the freehub? Will I need spacers? A new wheel?

I know my freehub will fit 9 speed. It is a standard shimano hub. But not sure how 10 will fit. I have read mixed reports as to whether you need a spacer or just need to readjust the outer/inner settings for the rear mech.

Thanks.

Yes, it will fit fine. 8,9,10spd freehubs are the same. If it's road you're talking about then you'll need a 1mm spacer behind the cassette if it's Shimano, if it's MTB then it'll go straight on.

MTB - you'll need new rear mech
Road - old rear mech will work.

Great. Thanks for that.
Yeah, it's a MTB hub.
Now I just need a 10 speed rear clutch mech and I'm all set for 1x10.

I went from 8 to 10 speed over a year ago. 10 speed is great.

I never had 9 speed, so I guess I should skip 11 speed and wait for 12! 😆

Without wanting to hijack the thread is it possible to use an 8 speed triple chainset with a 10 speed chain?

My hardtail is 8 speed, and I already have some SLX 10 speed shifters, would I just need a 10 speed cassette, chain and rear mech?

Good question. I'm hoping my 9 speed crankset will work with 10 speed.
Although I will probably end up going 1x10 anyway, so it won't matter.

you can use the chainset and you should get away with using 8sp rings too...as far as i know, the internal width of all shimano chains are the same.

yes

it will work with 9sp cranks. i upgraded from 8 to 10sp a few months ago...my 9sp cranks were new so i didnt bother changing the rings to 10sp. they still work so you'll be fine

drewd - merlin are selling deore clutched rear mechs for £23 at the moment. the 10 sp deore cassette is the same price. add a deore 10sp chain for £12 and you could be upgraded to 10sp for less than £60!
