I enjoy crawling along over root infested paths on my rigid surly and so drop pressure to give max cush.If the speed increases though I occasionally thump the rim (as to be expected)and was thinking some sort of Huck Norris DIY affair might help. Having read a few threads I am now somewhat confused as it seems many say they're not meant for use with such pressures? Could anyone with a good understanding please advise and, if it may be worth trying, which DIY approach seems to have the best results? I haven't been on the site for a while but seem to remember that there was a fairly recent thread on a DIY method using some sort of matting squares but have been unable to locate.Any pointers much appreciated.
Cheers.
I'm sorry to go off topic so soon, but out of interest, are you using Rabbit Hole or similar width rims?
I use Velocity Blunt 35s and find that 18-20 psi is as low as I can stand; anything less and I find it too wandery. Do the wider rims make that much difference?
That sounds REALLY low - I run about 16psi in my 3" Chupacabras on 50mm rims and still ding the rim a lot. Tyre inserts let you run pressures that are reasonably low but not lower than is sensible.
Yes I know it's low and it's not all the time. I just enjoy an occasional magic carpet ride. Yes it squirms a bit but I don't ride fast and rail corners etc...more fitness and exploration type riding. Re the rims I have maxxis chronicle up front on a p35 rim and tbh it's ok ..perhaps a bit wobbly but it's never come off or burped. On the rear I have a rabbit hole rim but due to clearance issues only a 2.35 ardent which spreads very wide ..almost too flat tbh!
I just play around with various wheelsets etc I have picked up over the years and don't take it too seriously but do value plush comfort. I also have 2 X pugsleys and a 5 spot all in bits but keep trying to make my surly ogre a simple do it all bike.
I must disagree. 8PSI is about what I'm running.
Both on P35 and Rabbit Hole.
Loads depends on your weight. In about 10.5st and it is just about fine for me. Once I was able to get as low as 5ish PSI, but that started floating and bending too much.
Trying home made insert might only help. Not using one myself up front, but rear, on the smaller wheel (650bx2.6) is helping a bit on my brick-like riding technique.
Cheers!
I.
