Wow! If ever I had a lump of money burning a hole in my pocket then I'd buy this.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1963-53-cm-Viking-Track-bike-Beryl-Burton-/203950300763?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p4429486.m46890.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

In a world where a 30 year old hot hatch can go for £80k, this looks an absolute bargain.

Postage is a bit steep.

I just don't get the classic bike scene at all. I can appreciate them but unlike a classic car I can't imagine they are fun to ride anymore compared to a modern bike and another bike just means one less bike space in my garage.

Proper part of history there. I've contacted British Cycling to inform them of this and asked that they explore how genuine it is and consider a purchase as a 'museum' piece to have it displayed somewhere. Given the push around quality and diversity at the moment it would be fantastic if exhibits from these early pioneers were available to view and inspire future generations. BC could easily afford and affirm their commitment to supporting women's cycling. If I could afford it and donate it, I would not hesitate. Great piece of history.

The same can be said for a classic car only it takes up a lot more space in your garage doesn't it?

It all depends what classic bike/car you are talking about though and how old it is.  Driving an 80's car around is okay as is riding an 80's bike.  Driving/riding 1940s car/bike is a bit different though but can still be fun.

For the bike in question, I would ride it and I would enjoy it.  I had a 1971 Mercian track bike a few years ago and it was a very nice bike to ride.

Classic cars can be just as much pain to drive as riding a classic bike

My 80's road bike takes some getting used to but once you settle into a ride its not too bad and the comments from other riders makes it worthwhile

Have a mate who does the London to Brighton Veteran car rally every year on bikes that are pre 1905 whilst being dressed in the appropirate attire for the year of the bike!

The Beryl Burton bike deffo needs to come back to the UK and be put in a museum for people to see and learn about

For anyone who doesn't know who Beryl Burton was.

Would be great if it comes back to the UK and gets put on display.

I really like it when things are out on display in public places like train stations, airports etc.

Good call @lotto.

There's great and poor examples all the way from then till now imo, cars and bikes. We can just have more tech and complexity now for what that's worth.

With the exception of geometry, old bikes don’t ride so differently to new ones. Got a titanium frame? Won’t feel that different. Stiffness is tube diameter and carbon and alloy won there. But geometry is what matters. Beryl’s bike will ride just fine. And no gears means it will feel just like my other fixed bikes. Too small for me though. Fortunately.

Going back to an old bike, the biggest difference you instantly feel is how much the skinny quill stem twists compared to a big tubular threadless steerer and stem.

Comparing it to any old classic car is a bit wrong.

This isn’t any classic car. It’s the equivalent of a car raced by Fangio.

If I had the money I’d definitely be buying it….and probably not riding it.

I have a 1960s french road race frame on modern rims and tyres with an SA 3spd I fitted as the derailleurs were knackered.  Also bull horn bars hipster fixie style - its lovely to ride apart from the useless brakes

Looks like it's about 6,900 over priced to me 😂

I got a very pleasant and speedy response from BC.

I elected to contact the educational department as I thought this most aligned with good reasons for considering a purchase and exhibition piece. Below is the response. I'll keep updating if I hear anything or if anybody else hears any progress it would be great if they could share also.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Let me see if I can get this in front of the right people to consider a purchase.

From a British Cycling perspective this may be difficult but the National Cycling is essentially a cycling museum on the concourse, even with a Beryl Burton display.

Will see what I can do!

Kind Regards,

Robbie George

So now My BC subscription fees will be covering the purchase of an old bike for them to gawp at between meetings?

Bloody typical.
