As the title says, what should I be looking at for around £700 second hand full sus trail bike?

Bike isn’t for me, I’ve just been asked to recommend something. He doesn’t want a hard tail.

Any recommendations would be brilliant.

Cheers

You can get quite a high end 26" wheeled bike for that - for example
"https://singletrackmag.com/classifieds/advert/yeti-575-26-classic/"

that sort of thing?

I’ve just been asked to recommend something.

My advice: don't get drawn into it, if he/she wants to buy a used bouncer it's really on them to do their own research, I would suggest they go skim through the classifieds on PB/STW/ebay etc figure out what their budget will actually buy and then go away and read up the old reviews and maybe MTBR posts on each candidate to see what sounds like a good pick.

If they hang off every word of your advice and then buy the 'wrong' bike then it's going to be seen as your fault. It's the sort of purchase they need to understand for themselves...

Should be able to pick up 27.5 with decent geometry and in good nick for that quite easily.

I'd go for something newer with less high end parts as things continue to move at pace.

very much this if they buy on your recommendation you will be to blame for every gear slippage, puncture creak groan worn bearing poor fork/shock function. Never again

Yeah I don't think recommending used bikes is a good idea since you're really looking for something nice to come up in the right condition. Trying to get a specific model of bike at the right price could be a long wait.

Secondhand Bossnut seems the obvious choice

You can recommend things to people and still make sure they make the final decision on what to buy. Highlight most likely areas to go wrong, what's worn out or may need a service so they are more informed.
You're not on the hook for anything.

I would agree with the advice re not getting too drawn in.

Good general advice is to buy (or borrow) a chain checker: a great wee tool for discounting the typical 'hardly used' sellers. Haggle that once the chain is >0.5% worn then budget for a new drivetrain (well it's going to be needed at some point!).

Otherwise - the old rule of approx 50% of new price depreciation in the first year plus 10% after that. If the stars align. So get them looking at stuff that sold for approx £1400 new a year ago. Dont go too old: "standards" are moving on.

A Boardman Pro FS would be a good option - the blue / green one.

Pikes / Gx 11 speed / Guide R brakes / mavic wheels (albeit a bit narrow internal width).

This sort of thing:

I'm selling a med cannondale trigger at the moment if it's of interest, 2015 bike that has been well used but also well maintained. If you want any further details drop me an email.

£700 should go a bit further one we approach winter, just depends if your friend can hang on.

Be patient, there’s the odd bargain about. Sometimes people list things at frankly ridiculous prices but those who want to sell will list at the appropriate price.

The odd bird Aeris is listed within that price and given the geometry was fairly forward at the time they still stack up well.

It wouldn't be a bad choice, plenty on ebay.

Would a Yeti be of interest - both 26 inch and Large. One Yeti ASR SL and other Yeti ASR 5 (new 1x11 XT). Both pretty well specced. One has to go...

The market is saturated with Boardman Team FS's, 650b version can be had for as little as £350 which takes some beating.
