I've been using wtb 700*40 tyres on numerous 700c rims for a while now without any issue with fit.
However I've repurposed some 29" specialized rival wheels on to my cross bike but the wtb nanos are crazy tight on the rim. I can't even fit the tyre on the rear.
I always thought 29 rims were similar if not the same, so what am I doing wrong??
Am I just unlucky that this particular combination of rim and tyre doesn't work??
In which case any recommendations for a tyre similar to the wtb nano that is slightly looser in the bead?
Thanks
some wheels use the "real" UST standard which might just involve slightly higher bead seats (not sure if spesh do this though) and I think I've heard it said before that nanos are pretty snug on rims
(... so I'm saying it's just bad luck really - maybe try fitting them on another rim first to ease them out as far as they'll go ?)
Yep. Ust is a standard that is a tad bigger than 700.
my reynolds atr wheelset is a gravel build but using 29er mountain rims.
most 700 gravel tyres range from ****ing tight to super ****ing mega tight.
IMHO you're just not doing it right.
Genuine question, is UST still a thing?
Some tyres are a bit tighter. Have you tried making sure that the both beads are sitting in the low point of the rim all the way round before trying to get the last bit on? Tyres that are bit tight usually benefit from some soapy water or bead lube (fnar etc) to get them to seat properly too.
I've been using all kinds of 700c road tyres, CX tyres and now gravel tyres on 29ers wheels for years without problem. Other than unlucky combos, it should work.
I've just put 700c nanos on WTB i21 29er rims, tight but fine with fingers and soap 😀
That is the beauty of tubeless, just use tyre levers to get on a tight tyre with no risk of puncturing the tube. I was using Max XC421 tubeless rimes with road tyres and they were always tight. Have just changed rims to DT R460 and they are still really tight as the road rims are also tubeless.
Some tyres play better with some rims than others - 700c and 29er rims are both 622 ERTO, there's no difference except in the minds of MTB marketing people who took a road bike rim and made it into an MTB one. Leaving the tyres in a warm place overnight, application of talc or soapy water and using the right technique is usually all that's needed or admit defeat, take it to your LBS and the spotty kid will show you hows it's done 😉

but a good chance you’ll damage the rim tape.

Yes and Mavic has just invented / adapted it for road also: https://www.mavic.com/en-gb/ust
Wtb are some of the tighter tires out there ime.... Unless your using the cheap steel bead ones - they are slack as hell
The Kevlar bead ones are brutal to fit -esp if your using Dt swiss rims .

Nope, never done that.
Ever tried getting WTB tyres on Stans rims? Tight as ....
Not a good combination, very sweary making. Recently replaced with Maxxis, so much easier
