Some hybrids have little clearance for full on offroad tyres/wheels though

Yep - 29 is 700c. Had to point this out to a salesman in a bike shop determined to sell me a 29er. Told him I already had one - just it used to be called a hybrid...
perthmtb - so you can get 2.4" tyres into your frame, yes?
Nope - 1.6" is the biggest that'll fit on the front. If I need anything more serious than that I use my MTB.
Got nothing against 29ers, just bike shop punks that think nobody's ever ridden big wheels off road before...
A 1.6 on a 700c rim won't give you the same size outer diamiter as at 29er though will it. 😉
A bit like saying that you've tried a fatbike because your MTB has 26er rims. 😀
TBH though it was seeing how well my crossbike rolled over stuff that first led me to try a 29er.
