Hi all. So I've got my new Ragley Trig and it's ace, first ride out today and really enjoyed it. It has 650b wheels with WTB Sendero tyres so they are at the off road end of the scale which is perfect for when that's the sort of mood I'm in but I will also use it for steadier rides that don't need such burly rubber.
I'm thinking a second set of wheels would do the trick and liked the 700c on my old Marin so want to look down that route. They won't need to be super tough but will need to be up to Canal paths and gentle off road so that rules out strictly road wheels I imagine? They don't need to be really wide but I think the tyres will be around 35mm and the spacing is 12mm x 100 and 142.
What would you lot suggest? Budget would be no more than £500 and more likely nearer £350. Second hand is fine providing they come up for sale regularly. I like Hope hubs so had wondered if a pair of the earlier Hope Hoops with the XC rims might work? Maybe a bit heavy for what I want? Out of my depth with road/gravel components so any advise would be appreciated.
Hope RS4, Sapim d:lights and DTSwiss xr331 rims or Kinlin xr31t rims.
Hope 20five. Or Hope with with a wide road rim. Something like a dt swiss R500 or whatever the welded joint equivalent is.
I'm sure some old mtb wheels will be ok. But they weren't designed for you're one current job. Often road and gravel rims are a bit heavier as they are built to handle greater tyre pressure
Some linked inked to some bargain kinesis mtb wheels on hear yesterday. They were new on ebay
Pro 4 not rs get my vote
Hope RS4, Sapim d:lights and DTSwiss xr331 rims
They look just the ticket, thanks!
Want to buy some 1 ride old? 😄 Bitex hubs not hope though.
Have a look at JRA. Just bought some road wheels using their bites hubs and in impressed
I've posted these before - Only a rear but unbelievably cheap price. You'd have to do some swapping & reselling of bits to get them to suit your frame as there is no flexibility on axle type or freehub (I've asked before as the 650s they list are different setup and the bits could just swap over). Would go nice with, say, a DT XR331 🤣
Anyhow:

I've ordered a pair of Just Riding Along 'Monitors' for my gravel bike, 25mm internal and £400 for 1600g.
Hunt 4 Season Gravel X-wide. £359. I've got the Carbon Gravel X-wides and I'm very happy with them.

Not at all, road wheels will be fine.
Fulcrum Red Zone 5 (or 500) are often available heavily discounted - 100g lighter a pair than the Hope 20five they replaced on my scales. Complete opposite to a Pro4 freewheel in being silent/deadly for walkers etc but I like them for that.
Thanks for all the replies, you have been really helpful 🙂
I'd like Hope but won't limit myself, especially for a bargain!

Only if they're cheap or you're happy to wait a bit! PM me details if you want mate.
I like Hope stuff but when I was in the same situation last year I went with a set of Hunt 4 season wheels. I didn’t get the gravel ones, but only because they weren’t in stock and I’m impatient. There is only 1mm difference in the thickness between the two though. Mine are shod with 38mm gravelking tlc (slicks) which roll really well and coped just fine with dry off road trails.
I did manage to put a couple of dings into the rear, but that was down to my clumsy attempts at bunnyhopping water bars. They needed a little tweak with the spoke key after a summer of riding, but I was riding them down some pretty rocky Scottish tracks which I’m sure is well outside what they were designed for. But despite the dings they still hold air (tubeless) just fine.
Any decent road wheels will handle light off road. IMO the punishment of hitting a small road imperfection at 30mph is worse than going over a pebble at 10mph.
If it was me I would be looking at rims with a wide width to get more volume in the tyre.
Any decent road wheels will handle light off road.
+1
I ride all my road wheels on BWs, gravel tracks etc without any problems. Bunny hop off curbs etc - they're way stronger than you expect.
I'm waiting for a pair of these rims to arrive and go on some hope pro2 Evo hubs. The front hub I had in a 26" wheel, the rear was from the classifieds here.
They are going on a gravel bike so I hope they stand up to gravel and light off roading.
I haven't got the spokes yet, but am hoping it will be £300 all in.
Scribe 365s - similar to the Hunts, but with endurance bearings and brass nipples so a bit more durable.
