Planning next year's trip:

Thinking of the Mabie House hotel, any good???

3 days riding, so:

2 of the Stanes (Mabie obviously, which other is recommended)

Anybody know of a good guide for a full on XC day?

They're all pretty good, but basing at Mabie I'd do any of Dalbeattie, Kirroughtree or Drumlanrig.

We got married at Mabie hotel last month 🙂
Had a great time there, and while we were there, we rode Mabie, Ae, and Kirroughtree. All great, and we're going back for our anniversary next year to ride some of the others!

If doing Mabie it's worth doing Dalbeattie on the same day. Both (Mabie especially) don't take any time to get round

Trekster is old school. I suggest carrier pigeon.

Great guide who knows them trails like the back of his hands

I assume he means the off piste stuff.

Trekster showed us some good offpiste stuff at dalbeattie- helped break up the trailcentreness of it nicely. But he did it because he's a good guy, he's not a "guide" guide.

Mabie house - stayed there last year for just under a week doing a load of riding. Decent food, nice place generally. Don't expect any wifi signal outside of the small downstairs lounge next to reception, other than that, it's great.

And yeah, Kirroughtree is a definite.

Was just about to post a similar thread so apologies for jumping on this one! I am in Dumfries and Galloway for a corporate outdoors jolly in September so was planning to stay on for a day or two and hit some trails.

What is Ae like as that is nearest to where I am staying?

Kirroughtree is one of the best trail centres I've ridden, so that. Mabie & Dalbeattie are also very good and doable in a day I think.

yup, (probably sounding like an arse here) Kirroughtree without doing the whole thing is a wasted trip imo

@hughjayteens, Ae is alright but it's too close to better riding to get many recommendations, unless you fancy doing the downhill and shredder or finding the offpiste stuff that comes off the top of the uplift. If you've not done the others around there, I'd definitely do them first.

Kirroughtree as just a red is a bit weird, it's not terrible but the outbound still feels like the start of a big ride then suddenly you're done. It's like only listening to the first and last tracks off a really good album, it's not just that you miss the good bits, it's that it all works together.

Nobody's done it yet... How about Drumlanrig? Not a stane but very very good. Haven't been lately, last I heard there were some closures but I don't know if that's still the case.

If you go to Kirroughtree do McMoab on the black bit! It's awesome! rode it about a month ago and wish I was back there now 🙁

Wolftrax at Laggan was fun but quite short you end up doing some of it over and over again.

It's also not particularly handy for someone staying at Mabie

Am usually kicking about Mabie or ae most weekends and could show you about if you like. Usually 3 or 4 of us who usually ride together. By next year a lot of Mabie could be gone. Machines in now cutting larch.

I enjoyed riding at Ae, though the loop was less than 2 hours to complete. The cafe at Ae is nice.

Thanks Northwind. I am actually staying at Drumlanrig as Friday is a property industry challenge day - 45km around Drumlanrig estate on mountain bikes, orienteering with various challenges such as shooting and a river swim thrown in the mix. If Ae is a short route, I might ride the Drumlanrig trails in the morning and then Ae after lunch on the Saturday.

Drumlanrig (red with black extensions) in the morn then Ae in the afternoon is a good day. Drumlanrig trails are fully open once more and riding very sweet just now (assuming no damage from that pesky Toughmudder last weekend).

Hi joelowden - we were at Kirroughtree on Monday 25th May - the day before we got married. It was really quiet and we only saw a couple of people. We've just had a think but we don't think it was us that you met 🙂
