I need to change the shifter on my daughters 7 speed bike (its all jammed up and she really struggles with the twist shift) So I am looking at getting a trigger shifter for it.

Unfortunately all my spare unused bits are 9 speed.

Can I use an 8 speed or 9 speed shifter to work with a 7 speed mech?

its 1:2 ratio mech.

Thanks

z.

Z,

The 9-speed shifter will not index correctly over the full range...maybe only a couple or three sprockets.

The 8-speed will be close enough to work for most of the range, especially if the rear mech has a guide pulley with lateral movement such as XT, XTR and Saint.

I have a Shimano MC10 Combo right 7-speed rapid-fire shifter/V-brake you can have for £8 posted. It is brand new.

i also got left and right 7 speed triggers if you want to make me an offer.
also if the twisters are stiff it could just be the cable and outers? you might want to change this anyway if you replace with triggers

Thanks for this guys, PaulD that sounds like a good deal to me, I'll email you now. Thanks

Yes I'll change the cables too, but the twist shift is generally falling to bits anyhow and she will use the bike for a while longer so its worth changing.
