Hi

So I got given a giant cypress. Lovely little bike for going to work on. How ever it has a 14-34 cassette on it and 3 up front and it’s pretty easy to out pedal it if that’s the right word. Is there any cheap upgrades maybe a cassette change ? I want to keep it 7 speed.

14-34 makes me think it’s a freewheel rather than cassette. Could limit your options

You can get a bit more speed with a 13t freewheel, though you might have to sacrifice the climbing gear

Eee you know I didn’t realise that. You’re right it’s a freewheel not a cassette.

If it is 7 speed cassette then you can get 11-34 or lots of variants. Memory of 6 speed freewheel wheels was that the axles went regularly. Moving to 7 speed cassette and never had an axle snap again.

FYI, 8 speed cassettes will work with 7 speed. The spacing between Sprocket is the same so you just limit the largest or smallest. I did this for a year when I couldn't get hold of a 7 speed cassette in the size I wanted.

Might open up more options for you.
