May be straight forward answer but i have a scott scale frame not being used with a groupset, no wheels and no fork.

Just wondering whether i could run 650b wheels (with a 650b fork so no probs up front) to buld a race bike.

Clearance is not amazing on Scale's for 26".

This is what I honestly don't get - a bunch of manufacturers are doing this. But if you put in a 650b wheel, with a thinner tyres so it'll fit, what have you gained?

Another niche to sell more bikes?
700c =622mm
29er =622mm
650b=584mm
26 mtb=559mm

Why not try 700d thats my new niche its 587mm the extra 3mm could make all the difference

MTBR 650b forum is useful for that sort of thing- have you searched on there?

You could just try some 700C wheels, with thin tyres.
It would be much the same diameter as a 26" wheel with fat tyres, so might fit.

If it helps , a 29er wheel with a cyclo cross tyre fits a 26er.

We did this quite a while ago by using a spaced down maverick fork (modified 29er conversion kit) and a shorter stroke shock on Heckler. So yes it is possible. Is it worth it? That's a kettle of fish on its own

If its tight with 26 then no, there is quite a size difference between 26 and 650b. 1 of my 26ers will take a 650b but it does have slides dropouts. My 650b specific takes a thin 29er but it's close. If you're anywhere near Evesham you're welcome to head over and try one of my wheels out.

Have looked at MTBR and faffed about. Dont think it can be done on a Scott Scale. A 2.25 Nobby Nic on a 26" actally wore away at chainstays when muddy the clearance was that close. 2.1 didnt have much more clearance so guessing I would struggle with 650b unless I ran a super skinny tyre which isnt what I was after. 😐

Most FS will fit a 650B if you shim the rear shock 3-4 mm or at least enough toe top the rear tyre buzzing the seat tube

I'm confused, do you feel the same about frame size??

26" to 650b is 1 inch bigger. In diameter, so that's half an inch in radius. Firstly, does that really make any kind of noticeable difference?

Secondly, if you achieve that by fitting thinner tyres, then the outside diameter hasn't changed much or at all, so you've changed nothing.

29" I can understand - 650b looks like Emperor's New Clothes for people who don't understand maths 🙂

After seeing those pictures of the new prototype Turner Burner doing the rounds I'm ashamed to say that 650b just looks kind of right on a modern bike. Not ridden a 650b though so speaking from a position of ignorance in everything but visuals! If we were to start again with a new standard and ignore the history of why we ended up on 26" and then 29er and the huge amount of tooling and equipment out there ready to use for both those sizes already and the piffling difference it all really makes, I'd probably vote for it.
