New bike has 30mm inner diameter rims, but I want to run 2.8 tyres, so believe I should really be running 35mm ID rims? So what options do I have replacement rim wise (28 spoke), or should I go 40mm? (that are not ridiculously expensive or stupidly heavy)
Or what (boost) wheelsets should I be considering? Hope 35W's are the obvious choice but £300 is a big jump from a couple fo (cheap) rims, spoke and a rebuild.
Just got these for a song - https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=266298;menu=1000,2,140,318;mid%5B69%5D=1;pgc%5B9876%5D=9877;pgc%5B17663%5D=0;orderby=2
You should see some DT Swiss XM1501s
They might be cheap for a good set of wheels, but my M 1900's are hardly rubbish & I'd kinda prefer to keep the hubs. That and M 1900 don't seem to go for much on fleabay
Planet X had some wtb scraper 45 rims for £45 a piece I was Interested myself
They also have a single cheap as chips wtb i35.. both 32 holes, which mean new boost hubs too.
The i35 Asym is a weird rim, I can't really see a place for it. Despite being narrower it weighs more than a Scraper i40. Makes me think its a bit lardy.
I would stick with running the 2.8s on the 30mm rim. The wider you go the more weight there will be added to an already heavy (if you get thick casing) tyres.
I've got a 2.8 Magic Mary on a 30mm rim & I'm more than happy with the lateral support. Even as low as 14/15psi
Plan to put a 2.8 specialized slaghter on the back once the weather dries up a bit too
Yeah, thinking I might try it on the current wheelset , as theirs no obvious cheap(ish) option.. nothing ventured and all that.. At least maxxis tyres have come down in price
