Well I wish I could pedal that fast. I bought a bike to cycle with my son this summer and recently I had this crazy idea to use my bike as a test bench for my turbine engine. a bit of fiddling and two weeks later here it is.

[img] [/img]

I have some video footage of it which ill post as soon as I have uploaded it.

Lol those videos fill me with confidence 🙂

A bit more about the bike and the engine. The power output of the engine is about 10 kw. But that power pushes against the air and isn't linked to the wheels, and this makes the acceleration different. The thrust from this engine doesn't push you back into your seat and if it did the engine would be much larger and your top speed would be a couple hundred miles an hour.
The power delivery is like a straight line on a graph. A bit like pulling off in your car in fourth gear and watching the speed rise at a constant rate, and still end up going quite fast. The cost of adding an engine like this actually less than most think, and costs alot less than most high end bikes.

I have only tested the bike on rough wet grass, and with the narrow wheels the resistance was very high. in the video I go from 0 to around 25m/h in roughly 120 meters, the bike was still accelerating but was starting to slide, It felt like I was in mud so didnt push it any further. As soon as this crappy weather clears up ill give it a go on a much smoother surface. The video is quite short ill get better footage next time. Oh, and the sound is AMAZING 8)

So how do you know/what makes you think, that it goes 60mph?

Just an 'educated' guess, here is a guy who got around 50mph on his Mountain bike, using an engine that has nearly 50% less power than mine :P. And my bike has thinner road wheels than this mountain bike with less road resistance so the top speed might be even faster than this, if i have the gonads to push it :?. Any one have a spare set of leathers handy?

Please make sure your next of kin knows where to post the video.

Great idea though. 🙂

What's the engine for originally?

Be brilliant on a tadpole trike.

60mph with a couple of litres of jet fuel between your legs. What could possibly go wrong.

What if you tried it out on a conveyor belt that goes backwards at the same speed the wheel go forwards?

Will the turbine run on LPG?

In which case you can chill your beer at the same time (It was probably STW that led me to that in the first place).

I'm happy that all the responses are positive, was a bit worried that I was going to get slated by the "bikes aren't meant to create pollution" junkies

in response to some posts:

Gaidong: I will definitely wear a helmet next time I have a go on a harder surface, and hopefully some leathers. It will be safe up to speeds the bike can handle, which is probably faster than my gonads will let me.

Epicyclo: The engine is used for a drones and generators. I'm sure a tadpole trike will be very quick with one of these.

Ps44: This particular engine runs on normal heating oil mixed with bearing lubricant. I have a high impact fuel tank on the bike which is placed within the A frame, and I feel that in this configuration its probably safer than a normal motor bike with there aluminium tank on the top of motor bike frame. I can also tweak the engine to run on diesel, so in case of a ruptured tank the leaked fuel shouldn't ignite .

Tired: Even my wife thinks its cool, she says I should sell these as a bolt on package for others. Will think about it if there is enough interest.

I doubt the wheels and tyres will make any significant difference - at that speed it's almost all about air resistance, so less flappy clothing will help, or more of a tuck if you dare. 73% more power required for 60 rather than 50 - though I presume with jet engines (as you kind of suggest) that the thrust generated is fairly independent of speed, in which case 44% more thrust required.

Have you any more details of your engine - is it based on plans from somewhere, or all your own design (not that I think I'm ever likely to build one, but interested in the idea)?

I'm taking that star straight back off him for the wheel reflectors.

Seriously I'd get rid of those if you're planning on going anywhere near 50mph - they won't do anything for your wheel balancing and you'll get vibration.

If I was going to do this craziness, I'd be running the heaviest, thickest, strongest bicycle wheels and tyres I could find. And thick inner tubes with slime in.

You are mental 🙂

They have almost zero safety benefit in any case.

Need more information as i want a jet engine, i 'd be happy enough to fire it up and just just listen to that shut down whine.

What's the rough estimate for such an engine/electronic control gear?

If you're in North England or Scotland I'd gladly test it for top speed if you're apprehensive or just simply want to live longer.

Brilliant!

@ PeterPoddy: well this is what Jeremy Clarkson had to say about it in this video, not sure if any of this has changed since. For now I'm treating it as being illegal on public roads. But there are plenty of back roads and tracks nearby I can go on.

Shermer 75: This is technically a Jet Engine, not sure why the industry call small jet engines 'Turbines'. A turbine is essentially a fan shaped object that has a medium passing through it making it rotate.

Somafunk: If you want something small just to run in your back yard I can help out with that.

Trademark: I do live in north England, Cumbria in fact. if you near and want to come have a look then let me know.

Caspian: I can bolt on of these to pretty much anything 🙂

Meanwhile I've gone and checked the pricing.

Tadpole trike + 4 of those motors would be more fun than just about anything. Maybe it would be safer (that being a relative term) using a gokart chassis.

Just imagine the fun of reverse thrust braking.... 🙂

Edit:
This could also revolutionise kayaking...

Well technically I think it's a jet turbine or turbojet - as opposed to a pulse jet or ram jet which doesn't have rotating parts. Assuming it does have a rotating compressor and turbine?

Well here is the first video, building up the guts to go faster on each run. The footage was taken with my phone and the wide angle lens makes it seem slower?. At around 40mph the steering felt a bit shaky might need a steering damper, or maybe it was me shaking because I was so cold.

Does your foot pass through the engine exhaust when you mount like that? 😯

Also watch how you build up speed. A lot of road bikes build up an oscillation at certain speeds on certain surfaces because of the harder tyres and buildup of surface vibrations. Less of a problem with mtb because the softer tyre acts as a damper. Google shimmy or speed wobble!

Otherwise -awesome and looking forwards to more!

Slacker head angle would help with steering stability (steering axis is further in front of the contact point). Probably not that helpful now I know.

Keep up the good work!

Just out of interest don't the wheels need to be balanced when doing high speeds?

Because there is little need for pedalling efficiently, you could do some pretty drastic things with your riding position to get your body lower and flatter. There are some big gains to be made in reducing air resistance! The gravity bike suggestion is spot on.

very cool effort there but at the risk of being a killjoy, probably best not to do it on a public road or do it next to any fields with livestock in them - you don't want to start animals panicking and running into fences etc. Other than that, top marks!

myoptic: no my leg doesn't pass through the hot gases. The hot air mixes very quickly with the surrounding air and cools very quickly. Makes for a nice had warmer at half a meter 🙂

Don't think 60 is close enough to "high speeds" to make it an issue, unless they are buckled or otherwise knackered.
I mean, road wheels aren't balanced and I've had knocking on for 70 going down some mountain passes. And probably only 10-15mph slower on the mountain bike.

60 is probably high enough for the unbalance due to the reflectors to start to cause issues, as that will make the wheel far more out of balance than normal 😉
