I bought a replacement 105 shifter after a crash a while ago and just getting round to fitting it when i realised it's a 5800 rather than 5700.

Its left hand/front and they are both double, but is the cable pull the same for the 10 and 11 speed versions? If necessary I could get a new front mech, but would like to avoid spending any more on the commuter at the moment.

Think 11 speed/x800 series front mechs are all using the long lever front mech. You might need a new one.

Have you checked the shimano compatibility chart?

the chart doesn't seem to have an opinion on it - doesn't show mixes of 10/11 speed. maybe because it doesn't work, but it doesn't explicitly say so

I was in the same position shifter/mech wise and ended up buying a new mech as I couldn't get the shifting quite right. The new mech sorted it straight away.
