I've been toying with upgrading my 3500 Sora stuff to 5700 105 for a bit, so just went to take a look at the Ribble sale.
Their groupset sale will do me 5800 11speed for £279, including brakes I'm not going to use.
I only really wanted 10 Speed, so started building a basket with 5700 sti's, cassette, rear mech and cx50 crank. I've already hit £230. Cx50 fd and a chain is going to take me within a fiver or so of 5800.
Am I being silly passing up 11 speed? I don't really want compact double ratios, I've got Dural 36/46 rings on my existing crank. I'm guessing the brakes won't have much sale value, what about brand new 5800 rings?
... Or just go luddite, buy the 5700 sti's, cassette and Rd and keep everything else I already have? I could use a new BB, but a crankset is an expensive way to do that...
Another point/option, I know the drive chain is narrower, but would my existing 9/10 Speed rings be usable in an 11speed drive train? Guessing it would be non-ideal...
Even more fundamental objection ahoy.
I've got a 135mm back end with a mountain bike hub including rotor mount. 11 speed cassettes need a wider freehub I believe, which in turn is going to make for needing a shorter hub body I'm guessing to cram it all in.
Does this effectively write off 11 speed in its current form for me, without sourcing a new hub and rebuilding? Is there even a hub that will take an 11speed Road cassette, a disc rotor and 135mm?
There are, but not many, and for that reason youre probably better sticking with 5700.
Pretty much answered this I think.
11 speed bargain means probably spending the same again on new wheels or rebuilding rear with something like a CX75 hub at the least.
Guess I'll weigh up how much I actually want a new transmission as my 9 speed is perfectly functional if tatty, then probably go 5700 if anything.
I did find an amusing Zinn article talking about taking a grinder to a 9/10 hub to get a 10/11 freehub on and then redishing, though! 😯
Yep, some freehub bodies can be filed down. What hub is it? Some can be converted, but it is extra faff certainly
Edit: if you like your chainrings why change them? Mech/STIs/chain/cassette is £250 or so on Rose Bikes. Current rings will be fine
