Anyone had any issues with their 55 RC3 ti forks, 2010 or later? And what are the service intervals/warranty conditions - does anyone know? My 2010 forks seem to be sticking (or possibly binding) at a certain point in the travel - not ridden them that many times, and everything else I've heard about these forks has been positive. Ta.
not got any myself but i'm sure the 3 year warranty has no service stipulation attached?
just got some 2012 44 rc3, mine state 3 year warrentty weather you service them or not
Mine did that, just send them back to windwave. Not enough oil underneath the dust seals i think.
Horatio - thanks for that. Were yours sticking then? If I put gradual pressure on mine while I'm standing on the pedals, they sink through 2-3 inches, then stop and don't budge unless I really push down. Also, how long did Windwave have them - I'm off to the Alps in three weeks! Thanks again.
Try turning them upside down and gently lifting wiper seal out and up the stantion. There is a little rubbery type ring under that which comes from the factory dry as a bone. Either lube that with some float fluid or similar or cut it out completely (i lubed mine).
This comes recommended from windwave..
I tried to lube them myself but felt like i'd damage something lifting the seals up. Windwaves turnaround was 2 weeks, so i'd get in touch asap!
Mine felt ok pushing down with the front brake on, but leave it off and push down and there was huge stiction/notchiness, noticeable riding too.
It did it all the way through the travel though, not at any one point.
Seanodav - do you mean carefully prise the main seal at the top of the fork leg away from the stanchion, then drop some lube down inside. Or is it more complicated? How come tip the bike upside down? Ta for your help - I'm a bit crap on stuff like this.
Did you have air in, Horatio? I've read that air turns them notchy, but luckily I get away with no air inside.
really is that simple just be carefull not too scratch stantion.
Turn it upside down to prevent any shite dropping inside.
Once wiper seal is popped up the foam-rubbery ring will just slide up stantion, squirt fluid onto the ring all the way around using syringe.
There should be a little indent on fork leg where you can get a small screwdriver under seal, just cover driver with a little sparkys tape or similar
Also when you push wiper seal back in, seat the bit near arch first to make sure its in all the way
i saw a video on the marzocchi website, it says if you dont plan to service regular to remove the foam ring under the wiper seal as it will cause slight sticking feeling
If you don't need the air spring to assist (ruins spring rate if you do) try running them "negative air", ie. compress the forks, then open the air valve, let the air out, and release the air valve before taking weight off the forks. Mine seemed to have a slight step in the stroke from new, did this whilst playing around with initial set up (might have read it on here or MTBR, sure I didnt come up with it myself!) and they are plush and linear with no stop or step.
my 55 r3 ti 2012 are my fave forks ever.
love in a fork 🙂
mine were notchy for about 18months.. they've gone back to amazing now despite leaking a few psi every now and again. silicone spray helps no end. I would also recommend having them opened up and putting the correct oil levels in so you don't have to compensate with air.. i think that's what changed a good fork into a great fork for me.
Just take them to the Alps as they are and have them in the background of every photo, upside down. Why change the habit of a lifetime? 😉
Lol, Cupid - wondered how long it would take you to spot this! How come you didn't see my recent post about helmets for pin heads?! See you out there soon. I'll carry an enlarged photo of myself so you can recognise me at the airport.
Thanks for the tips everyone - I'll see how I get on. The forks have been generally mint apart from the recent sticking. Make my Van 36s feel primitive.
On the 55 rc3 ti 2011, there is no indent on the fork leg to prise dust seal off. Doesn't seem to be do-able without damaging the rubber seal. Anyone done this on the 55's?
FWIW windwave are ace, in general. Give them a phone.
Hi Guys,
the foam ring was shipped dry on the 2010 models, these are easy to lube -http://themarzocchiworkshop.posterous.com/tuning-tip-oiling-the-foam-ring
if you don't want to lube the rings, just cut them out and not bother with them.
cheers
Dan
Yep, just done it. Dust seals came off pretty easy. Cut the foam rims out and put some pace grease between oil seals and dust seals.
