A friend of mine is looking to get a decent(ish) bike for around about £500. Now to be totally honest i have no idea about this end of the market 😉
So, i'm guessing it's a bit too late in the year for "last of the 2011 bikes" deals, but are there any good offers out there at the moment on new bikes, and if not, other than good old Ebay and the classifieds on STW, where should i be looking for a S/H bike ?

Ta Muchly 😉

You can get one HELL of a secondhand bike for that price, but you gotta be a bit patient and look EVERYWHERE.

I have no doubt I could build an Inbred with decent suspension forks, discs, etc for that price, or buy one whole.

£150-£170 would finish that of with some nice bits.

£350 full bike? I'm tempted myself!

Spesh FSR?

Ditch the awful Manitous, get some used Fox/RS forks for £100-£150. Sorted!

Secondhand is all good if you can find and trust one put together with newish parts. But there's nothing like the feel of brand new 🙂

I am quite liking the Boardman Urban Mountain Bike Team.

There's also nothing like the feeling of having a REALLY nice bike that's cost bobbins!

🙂

It certainly looks like it's possible to find a better spec bike s/h, but that might take a bit longer than just going out and buying a new one. The thing that worrys me is "crappy forks" at that price point, some are so shocking it would be better to be fully rigid!

Also i just know he's gonna want to keep up with my Zesty when we ride togther, which could lead to a few sketchy moments...... 😉

Also, i've got most of an XT drive train in components after a serious bout of "upgradeitus" on my two bikes, so maybe a decent older frame of Ebay, allowing for the fact that a few bits might be a bit worn out etc?
