Got a friend looking for a hardtail under £500, closer to £400 preferable. They will be riding natural stuff like Rivington / Darwen and canal paths.
They are looking at this -
Seems decent enough to me, Deore front and back mech, M355 brakes, SR Suntour XCR fork.
Can anyone suggest anything better for the price?
Does it have to be new and how tall is your pal?
He may considering used but wanted new. He is about 6ft.
I know it's over budget but they'll probably have another flash sale soon...

You could pick up a nice 29er HT secondhand for £500 of course. Perfect for canal paths and the moors round that way (I'm local myself).
Slightly above your budget but http://paulscycles.co.uk/m1b0s2p5083/SCOTT-ASPECT-610-2013 this in XL or http://paulscycles.co.uk/m1b0s2p5163/CANNONDALE-TRAIL-SL-1-2013 in Large?
or this in large http://www.wiggle.co.uk/charge-cooker-3-2015/?
If I get time I'll see if I can do a budget MTB/road section on my website 🙂
Cheers chakaping I will suggest it to him
I'd be all over this if I were him http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1878756/
I saw a Charge Duster on the bay the other day, Fox forks iirc, full XT incl wheels, for less than that
