had 5 from new, now 2 yrs old, had progressively noisy rear end, now downhill at speed feels and sounds as if running on rim, biggish hits at lower speed seems fine. have stripped and regreased swing arm, rear wheel and shock etc, everything seems ok no play enywhere. now stumped, any ideas muchly appreciated.
Possibly the rear mech spring gone slack, allowing it to bang around, slack cable/hose rattling around in swingarm,or maybe the shock needs a service.
Does it sound like a filing cabinet falling down some stairs?
I had this last summer, found it only happened in certain gears (smallest 4) - my cassette was a tiny bit loose, tightened it and problem solved.
coatesy, mech not very old all good, nothing loose as far as i can see, shock recently serviced, thats what i dont get, there is very little to go wrong and what there is i have checked, wolly - yes
Any chance you're just riding it a bit faster/harder than you used to? All my bikes make more noise now than they used to 😉
Chain tension?
I have a 2010 5 and it is just noisy when I hoof it down stuff, more so than other bikes I have owned. However if your bike has become louder than usual and there is no play in the swing arm, shock is good and rear mech is sound maybe chain length? Also you say that it not only sounds but feels like you are running on rims. Have you checked your rear shock is set up properly? If you have, maybe mess with the settings to see if it helps, rebound too fast??
Tyre pressure too high maybe?? Long shot but thought I would throw it in there!
Just a few ideas! Hope you get it sorted.
maybe riding a bit faster (dry tracks everywhere helps) and appreciate 5 is a noisy bike downhill but this really does feel like tyre has come off the rim completely and its stop get off and check tyre bad ! I do not understand as it is still plush at lower speeds and everything is lubed and play free. think lbs could be the answer, maybe mental block on my part, wouldnt be the 1st time 😳
What type of service has the shock had? An air-sleeve service won't cure any issues inside the shock that may be causing a problem.
Beardie, not sure what the noise sounds like but i had really 'creaky' rear end on my 5 a couple of years ago. Turned out to be the QR tension. I swapped it for one of the bolt / nut skewers and it's not 'creaked' since.....hope that works for you too.
Are you sure that you're shock is not packing down at higher speed because the rebound is too slow .
As above, try faster rebound and lower tyre pressure. My 07 five makes a right racket when riding down flights of stairs!
