Wonder if it'll take those Surly 26+ rims/tyres?

I was just looking at this wondering what they would sell like if they upped the price in order to drop some weight.

Ignoring more lower volume brands you have on one at the low and heavy end and cotic at the expensive but decent weight end (there are more expensive and lighter steel frames but ignoring those).

I wonder how well the 456 would sell if it shaved off a bit of weight /increased the spring in return for another £50-75 on the frame cost. Would be interesting to see the figures of cost v weight to see what would be palatable in the market.

edit: my thinking is as a C456 owner going to something like the steel frame would be a big hit in weight but I don't necessarily want to spend out on the new carbon version if they bring one out.

Are you suggesting an 85345650b?
It has been discussed.

in short - yes (after I realised what you meant)

That is going to make for an interesting frame sticker!

just looking up some figures..

456 Evo with paint 5 lb 10 oz (2.55kg)

Soul (17.5") 4.4 lb (2kg)

C456 3 lb, 3 oz (1.5kg)

perhaps that is the plan - dont improve the paint job but cover the entire frame in stickers 😉

The carbon 456 is pretty light - not sure how it compares with other carbon frames but it is favourable in terms of price which is its USP

so why bother

because to not bring out a 650b option would really hurt their sales against makes who do and people like a reason to upgrade.

How about a 63145650b? Was interested to see Stanton claim that they could do the 631 Slackline at the same weight as the 853 one, for a lower price. They don't mention ride quality, mind.

I have 456 and love it. I just don't get the hype. Build one because we have to? Sorry but that sounds a bit daft to me.

I'm sure On One or Brant (sorry if I am mis-quoting you) had said never ever to 650b?

I am in the market for o 650b but I really see no point if they're the same.
I'll just stay with the 456.

''650B? They’ll be those bikes you can’t get tyres for anymore. Not that you can now. Which is good as we’ll all have someone to laugh at. And everyone likes someone to laugh at.''- Brant, 6th February 2012, BikeMagic.

So is it worth buying a new 650b frame as shown or stay with the 456?

Will probably end up in the same cloud of scotch mist as the el guapo 29er we've been promised for a gazzilion months.

though the 456 carbon fitted a 650 b looks like enough clearance on mine

If you've already got a 456, then you'd probably be wasting your money by buying the 45650b. You do know you can fit 650b wheels into a standard 456, don't you?

No. I did not know that. Thanks. That's saved me a few quid. If i don't like it I'll build my wheels back to 26" That really begs the big question?
Why did on one bother?

Please don't spend any money on my word; i've never tried it myself, but i am aware that it's been done before.

I just tried Googling for some source information, but that's going to be hard to find since they've announced a proper 650b version...

456 carbons take 650b but not the steel one.
Of course that means you end up with a higher BB etc which makes it handle a bit odd.

Brant,What about putting a 2.4 tyre on a "that blue" 456? will that be similar?

Given that there's almost exactly an inch difference between 26" and 650b rims, for the same tyre profile 26" rims should give you 27" diameter tyres. If they'll fit the frame.

The above mentioned Surly tyres are 26x2.75, which gives a total diameter of 27.5".

Well as the 45650b in the blog had 2.4's on the big wheel's you'd still be an an inch sort.

Kinda like seeing if you like the new Passat by sticking a VW badge on a Fiesta.

Mate has a C456 with 650 bs on it. It doesn't handle odd at all. Another mate ran 29in wheels on his C456. - enemy that was OK. I won't be buying a new frame to try 650 b but then I already have 26 and 29 bikes so I'm not buying the hype

From the One One website:

Better? No. Different? Yes.

Wow, honesty in advertising.
Very refreshing.

Anyone with a brain can see that 650b is nasty, cynical, manipulative marketing bullshit.

Ah well, at least we now know exactly how stupid the instigators of this new standard think we are.
The sad thing is, they would appear to be right.

There seems to be a bit of animosity when all we're trying to do is get some info. Is fruit back on stw?

Eh?
No animosity here - One One didn't instigate the 650b revolution, unless I've missed something.

Iolo. You don't need to buy anything. The single most important thing to do with any mountainbike is to ride it and have fun.

Better? No. Different? Yes.

Sounds like how a guy caught having an affair would describe the other lady...
Woman.. Was she better than me?
Man.. Not better, just different.

There has to be a reason the bloke hopped on the other woman for a ride... Same for 650 I guess 😉
Maybe the excitement had gone from the 26 relationship, maybe the relatiinship had run its course and it was simply time for a change. or maybe he realised he'd made a mistake and 27.5 was the one he should be riding

Maybe that's what everyone is buying - it'd be a bit daft for a company not to produce the one thing that all the lemmings wanted to buy...

The c456 doesn't have the lowest BB in the world and putting 650b wheels on it would make it too high IMO, so the bike would handle a bit cack.

I think that's what brant was getting at, perhaps less diplomatically, in the post he deleted.

None. A fantastic bike.
It's just you say better? no. This makes me me wonder why I should spend any additional money for this 650b fad to try it if its's no better. That is all.

I'm definitely interested, especially if there's an 853 one. My favourite bike right now is my Inbred, which I converted to 650b (dropped the forks from 120 to 100 for BB height and used a 1 deg slackset to retain the head angle). It suits my riding style better than other bikes 4 times its value

@brant: what size is the seat tube?

i am guessing 30.9 but 31.6 would be nice to match the carbon and aluminium bikes.

30.9, same as Titus alloy frames.
31.6mm would have weighed (even) more.
