hi guys sure this has been done before but advice would be great, i currently ride a summer season which im really enjoying but there are a couple of issues,
1) dropper post size, id like to use a reverb or ks but obviuosley the ss is a 27.2.
2) secondly i do feel the extra weight of the ss build over previous bikes ive ridden uphill-this is not as much of an issue to me but while im mulling it over i may as well take it into consideration.
after saying the above i do love the way the ss rides in genaral so dont want to move to far away from that.
ive always thought about a blue pig, now that the frame takes a 30.9 post its a big plus but also ive seen the 456 carbon which looks fantastic but the head angle is steeper than the ss.
does anyone have experiance of the above bikes and what do you think , how does the 456 carbon ride compared to the ss is the reduced headangle noticable ? and the blue pigs geo is very similiar to the ss other than the seat tube so does that also ride very similiar to the on one ss
sorry if that all seems a little long winded but any advice would be appreciated, and appologies if this has been done before
points that may come up-
1)i know that you can get 27.2 dropper posts, i have the hilo but cant get a remote from anywhere and the ks are out of stock till august- i dont really like the look of the gd.
2) mtfu, the climb on the ss is fine but its just a noticably heavier ride particuarly with the kit i have on it than ive had before not a problem but would be nice to take it uphill faster than i can.
cheers guys
Not ridden the summer season but carbon 456 is certainly slack enough for me with a 150mm fork. It's very confidence inspiring on steep bits.
If weight is important to you then get one.
thanks chaka i am tempted especially with the current discount
What length fork do you have on the SS?
140 pikes
I've been riding 456's since the original baby blue steel one. Now I've got the lynskey ti one, and a carbon one as my current bike. The ability to run a dropper post on the carbon is great, and I run 150mm revelation teams, with sensible kit and it still weighs under 25lb! My mate has a ragley mmmbop and he actually dropped his revelations to 130mm as the head angle was soooooooo slack. Even now it feels like a chopper to me when I ride it.
The head angle on the 456 is pretty much spot on IMHO. Slack, but still precise. Don't forget the ti456 was the first 10/10 frame in most mags, and the geometry is the same on the carbon. Brant got it bang on first time.
Before any ragley fans come looking for my blood, I'm selling my ti frame to help fund the new ragley fs when it comes out. Slack playbike porn!!!!!
lol, was just looking at the new ragley geo and it claims 67.5 compared to the 65 of ss, wonder how thats worked out, the ragley fs looks amazing in the proto build i must admit
The Ragley geometry is measured with sagged forks, measured static it's about the same as a SS I think. I doubt a Pig is going to build up any lighter than a Summer Season btw. A Pig X might be slightly lighter but not by very much.
yeah guessed that, any thoughts on handling?
I've not ridden a SS. The Pig's ace on steep downs, carves rather than snips, climbs well cos your weight's well forward, but steadily rather than brightly, a bit uninterested on flat and undulating stuff because of the weight. The frame's about 5.5lb and my build, with Pikes, but lightish wheels - Flows/Pro 2s - was somewhere around 30lb. I really liked the handling, I wasn't so keen on the weight, probably because I live in the Peak and got fed up with hauling it uphill. No, it's not that heavy in the overall scheme of things, but it's never going to climb as fast as something a bit lighter and the nature of the bike means you tend to use big tyres that grip rather than roll fast.
I've owned a Blue Pig and now have a Summer Season, the SS is definately slacker up front - my SS is slacker at 130mm than the Pig was at 140mm (using the same Lyrik u-turn Fork).
I also find that the SS has better tyre clearance although I had the original pig so this may have been changed.
I prefer the SS but YMMV.
Can't comment on the weight as I've put a heavier wheelset on the SS.
thanks guys think ive got it about right, with the ss from the sounds of it and ill just have to mtfu on the climbs and carry ceratin climbs in the peaks, thanks for your input everyone
ive got a rase dropper post - 8" of drop and a 27.2 chassis. Not as smooth as the reverb et al, but probably a more reliable design (less to go wrong)
