If you click the links, then the magnifying glass you can see the original hi-rez pic and you can make out how I've fitted mine.

What issues are you having?

Basically i couldnt get the front to index at all...it turns out that OnOne have supplied me the wrong type of mech - a conventional type instead of the type you have fitted. Sorted now that i know the issue. Cheers

a conventional swing mech works fine on my 456..

both conventional swing (which i have) and top swing (which kieran has) will work on a 456.. but they have to be top pull..

maybe you have got a dual pull (cable can be routed to pull from above or below) mech and have routed the cable wrongly? or a bottom pull mech..?

as above, i've had both a top swing and conventional work fine on the 456... the important bit is that it is either top-pull or dual pull compatible and that you've routed the cable correctly.

Spacehopper, its a dual pull, but can only route one way..from the top as yours does. Its had me pulling my hair out in despair trying to sort it, and the only way i can get it working is to put a top swing on. Ive put loads of front mechs on over the years, and never had any problems at all, until now...but its sorted now at least. Whether its a faulty mech or simply my cack-handedness is anyones guess.

out of interest, what was the model of mech you had problems with?

huh? ❓

if it's dual pull, it can route from top or bottom. May need to swap the cable clamp around or something though.

Top swing or down swing makes no difference (unless frame design or bottle mount dictate one or the other).

The frame will only route the cable from the seat tube above the mech...there are no guides under the BB to route from the bottom.

CP, its an M661 SLX front mech, conventional pull.

you can use a DMR mech verter to run a bottom pull mech.

Indeed on 16" 456s it actually improves the cable routing when running a conventional mech, as when you run the cable directly from the frame boss to the mech, it's at quite an angle. With the mech verter the cable can now run straight down, round the pulley and back to the mech.

interesting it's an SLX. I had a MARE with an SLX conventional on a similar arrangement - i.e. top pull. It was advertised as dual pull, and looks dual pull, but could never really get it working properly. Went onto another bike in a bottom pull configuration and it works great. I've an XT conventional dual pull on my scandal, and it works in the top pull configuration.

Wonders if Shimano cocked something up on SLX dual pull. They can't have done, surely! Perhaps mis-bagged/boxed?!
