I've just rebuilt my 456 after a couple of years of no use, replacing a couple of bits, and out of interest I decided to weigh it, it's 28lb dead, just curious to know how much lighter I could get it without spending silly money or having it break the first time I cycle off a curb?

What is a realistic weight for a steel 456 build?

I'd be quite interested in this. About to build mine with Fox RL32s, mix of XT XO chainset, hope X2s and EN521/Hope pro 2 wheels, any ideas what it will be?

Interestingly my recently built lightweight bullit is also the same weight at 32 lbs although the spec is a bit more lightweight, pace carbon forks, carbon cranks carbon bars, very light tioga tyres, xo shifters and rear dereailler, and avid elixirs with only 160mm rotors..

cabon pace's on a coil sprung bullit? Why?

flexy and not so plush forks on a 8lb coil sprung frame?

1) In their defence the paces are coil sprung 150mm fighters, and very plush indeed, there isn't any flex. Some people complain about flexing paces but I cant see it or feel it. I do have 9mm bolt through as well maybe that helps. And as you well know, I am 14 stone and effing fat.

2) The reason is a bit long and tortuous. I bought the medium bullit frame brand new, after two years I admitted to myself that for the downhillyness I wanted it for it was too big for my midget stature, not chucakable enough. Although i was happy with it for mor normal xc riding, so I bought a 2nd hand small. V happy. But couldnt sell the medium for more than 300 notes which was just to painful to bear so I though I'd build it up as an xc machine as people always say the bullit can make a good long travel "xc" bike. In order to make up for the bullits portlyness I went for the lightest shit I could afford.. Don't diss me man you havent ridden it, its bloody quick and absorbs everything.

3) Blow me.

4) I think the bullit frame and shock is more like 10lbs anyway.

my mate's 456 weighed in at just over 15kg. that is with coil Lyrik fork, heavy duty rims and spokes and a mish mash of parts.

he destroyed his rear wheel a while ago and bought a new set of Bontrager thingies. the old rear wheel weighed 2.2kg (!). the front wasn't far off. i think he's saved almost 1.5kg on the wheels alone....

now with bash guard and XT brakes instead of K24s.

28lb and a whisker..
16" frame
Rigid Orange F8 fork (450mm A-C)
Mary bars
SLX drivetrain
Avid Juicy 3s
Deore hubs and Sun Blackeye rims with Conti 2.0 MKs

It's like a Scud missile only less accurate.

My 16" comes in at 30lbs on my £2 fishing scale. Coil pikes 721s and a generally strong build that I'm not going to break unless I do something really silly/unfortunate.

Oh and its pink 😀
