A colleague is looking for a new bike at around £400. Main uses will be commuting and South Downs riding, nothing super technical but proper off road rather than gravel. Have you seen any good deals?

Maybe have a look at Gooutdoors and their Calibre bikes.

Example:

Calibre Two Cubed 0.4k GBP

Bare bone 27.5 100mm travel hardtail

Decathlon in the price range IMO.

Pinnacle Kapur

One under budget and one over. If your colleague has an old bike to trade in, uses quidco and has a load of Tesco points spare Evans are a good shout at the moment.

Voodoo something or other came top of an MBUK test recently.

@ jeffl - Voodoo Hoodoo came top of a sub-£500 hardtail test getting 5/5. The Calibre also scored well.

Cube Aim SL from bike depot. Cubes are well priced at retail but this has a couple of hundred quid off. Saddles are hard though so a charge spoon would be first upgrade

Voodoo looks good though

You won't go wrong with that Cube Aim or a Hoodoo.

I see there are only xs and xl left on the Cube though 🙁

On the positive side, the Hoodoo is a 1x10, so an easy start for a new biker.

Don't forget with Halfords you get 10% off if you're a British cycling member. Also they seem to have a bike sale every other month so may be worth waiting for one of those.

My mate has one of the new geo Voodoo Bizangos that he's hardly used, from memory he might have upgraded a few bits. Size large, in Worthing and I'm sure he was after 400 for it.

Thank you Mr Rex but he’s after small/medium and something new and shiney (otherwise I would have palmed him off with one of my cast offs).
I think he will be happy with either the Voodoo or the Cube...just personal preference and convience now.
