So I have a 3x9 gearing setup and want to move to a 1x9 setup. All Shimano so my thoughts are all I need is new mech with a clutch built in. And of course a new single ring.

So just fitted an XT M8000 mech but I can't get it to go past 6th gear. My understanding is that the mech movement is all controlled by the shifter and you can use any mech. Is this correct or has the leverage changed between 9spd and 11spd mechs?

yes.

an 11 speed mech won't work with a 9speed shifter, iirc the 11speed shifter pulls more cable per 'click'...?

Will a 10 speed mech work with a 9 speed shifter?

No.

1x9 is just your existing shifter and mech with a chainring and 9sp cassette of your choice. You will need a chain device. Just a top-guide should suffice. A thick-thin ring will help a lot too.

Yak, I have a thick and thin chain ring, its just the combinations of mech and shifter that I am interested in as they always worked in the past

7 / 8 / 9 will all work with each other.
10 works with 10
11 will work with 11

All Shimano of course. Different shifter cable pull and different ratio of mech movement to cable pull.

SRAM works with SRAM.

Similar but, frankly I don't care. It's made of fairy wings and not suitable for it's intended purpose, IMHO.

Oh, you are looking for the mech end bodge to change the leverage ratio.
I don't know it, but it's on here somewhere I think, but the correct answer is ^, ie don't mix and match once above 9speed.

Right then it seems I need 11 speed shifters, 11 speed cassette and then the question of what changes do I need for my wheels / Freehub?
