3D printer owners. Do me a big favour?

I need a 22.2 to 31.8mm handlebar shim. These only seem to be available from US bike shops and I reckon this is an ideal use case for 3D printing.

Would any of you owners be kind enough to make me two of the below? Obviously beer tokens or a donation to your favoured charity would be a fair exchange. Thanks.

To hold your handlebars? (presumably BMX/Cruiser bars?)

Nah, I've done a couple of seat post shims in PLA and they're still working fine, but the worst case for their failure is my seat post slides down and I look like a tit. I'm not sure I want to help you with your DIY dentistry project...

Good luck...

3d printed in metal maybe, but I think there's too much risk that plastic will alter properties too much under compression and with varying temp.

I wouldn't.

Agree with @cookeaa, not sure plastic is the material of choice here

Cheap BMX stem a la Charlie's Karate Monkey might be a safer solution?

Bet you someone with a lathe would knock you it up for very little; bit of 1-1/4" bar stock, bored out and parted off, you could just (neatly) hacksaw it down the middle and file to finish...

Yeah, PLA really isn't a good option for the amount of torque and load it'll need to hold. Even on something like 100% infill, i just wouldn't put plastic between bars and stem.

(this is an ideal usecase for a friend with a lathe or mill, and a piece of metal. subtractive manufacture, the math still checks out).

@infovore Isn't that plastic for a Garmin mount or similar?

Fair enough chaps, appreciate the thoughts. I assumed that a bit of distortion into the faceplate cut out and working in compression wouldn't present too much risk of failure. I'll find another solution. 👍

infovore - spotted those, (SJS is my goto place for unusual bits). I need a smaller ID. You can get 22.2 to 24.5, but stacking multiple together definitely feels like a big risk of slippage.

@cookeaa ah yes, the answer to your question is "probably not, that's made of rubber". apologies!

I'd happily knock one up on my mini lathe for you but the speed potentiometer is broken so I can't do it until the new one turns up.

Don't you need 2 pieces rather than the 1 in your diagram?

That's kind of you Murray, If I don't' get sorted I'll maybe get in touch with you in a few weeks.

Yes, but identical so I didn't draw it twice, or as cookeaa noted a tube of the right ID/OD and I can cut it in half with a hacksaw.

Can you not just use a 24.5 stem? I have an Easton 100mm stem which I use with Soma bars.

That's made of rubber, so definitely not

I could, in fact there's one on there at the moment with a 22.2 to 24.5 shim, but it's not the right length/angle/colour combo and I can't find one that's not 31.8.

What length/angle/colour combo are you looking for? This could be a "stealth add". ;o)

What bars are these for anyway? I'm intrigued.

Something like a Surly Sunrise or Moto-X  I imagine? My Surlys came with a 22.2-31.8 adapter.

ajantom has it, very much like the Surly Sunrise but actual motorbike handlebars (cut down a bit) as they're loads cheaper! I want to get it properly finished off before pictures.

What length stem are you after, there's loads of BMX stems about in all sorts of lengths.

(Also intrigued)
