Hey guys
Simple one for those in the know.
Would I need a medium or long cage derailleur for a 38t chainring and 11-36 cassette?
In future if I ever wanted to change the cassette to a sunrace 11-42 cassette would the same derailleur do the job or would I need to change it again?
Thanks
10 speed medium will work with 38/11-36, for 11-42 you'll need to fit a lidarets goat link or one up rad cage.

To future proof it to 11-42 could you not just fit an 11 speed medium SLX/XT?
Do you just have the 38T chainring?
If you had say 24T and 38T chainrings with 11-36 cassette, I believe you would need a rear derailleur that could cope with a 39 tooth range.
Bloody hell 38x36, how flat is it where you are? 😉
Sounds like CX gearing to me.
Thanks for the replies.
Sorry should have mentioned its for a commuting mountain bike running slicks. No off road action whatsoever.
Single 38t and thinking 11-36 slx cassette.
Just need to know the right size for the derailleur. Im pretty sure it is a medium cage i need but just wanted to make sure.
I have checked the gearing ratios and i will lose slight top end to my current setup. This is ok with me as i have a very short commute.
Short cage Zee or Saint would work as well for 11-36
Medium cage will work for 11-36 or 11-42
I was about to suggest a medium 9sp mtb derailleur. Running an xtr medium on my cx bike with 11-32 on training wheels and a 38T ring.
Med cage SLX clutch works fine 38t - 11-40
Thanks for the help guys.
