After a not so glamorous 35 stem (50mm length) for my carbon fat bars.

Not a big fan of the Renthal one - too much gold.

Ideally looking for something with a black face plate that covers more of the middle part of the gold on the bars!

Was looking at the Thomson Elite X4 which has a nice solid face plate!

Any other recommendations? See a lot of stems with minimal metal but prefer some more coverage!

Highly recommend the RaceFace Turbine R 35, beautifully crafted, light and awesome little stem available in black and various lengths! Just be careful not to over torque the bolts like I did - that was totally my fault not an issue with the stem!!

Gusset s2 or Raceface Atlas, both black and have some detailing but its subtly attractive.

Depends on your definition of ‘solid’. They have a reputation for cracking.

+1 for RF atlas.

Nukeproof Neutron is available in 45mm length and fairly non-flashy and has a solid front plate. I prefer the looks of the more expensive Horizon stem but it's an open front plate.

But the Horizon is lighter ... how can you grab the Strava K/QOM with an extra 10g?

+1 to RF Atlas, forgot the Turbine is not a solid face plate, doh! I have also run an Atlas (albeit at 65mm length) with a FatBar Lite for about 5 years, it's been brilliant 🙂

77designs is the lightest but hard to find
Renthal apex lightest easily available
RF turbine R lightest all black
PRO Tharsis just above it, little more coverage

All of the rest are like 175g+ for 50mm which is a boat anchor and no stronger. Why choose to add 50g of weight and often pay more?

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I will just go open front and live with a bit of gold on display.

Will have a look at the stems mentioned.

If he's looking at a thomson elite x4, gram counting is not on his mind, that thing is over 180g.
Edit, got your reply in before me, I got interrupted mid typing.

I'd personally pick the newer Burgtec one but they're not very chunky looking.

Funnily enough I just sent back a Burgtec MK2 as it was slipping on the steerer which seems to affect some of them. They replaced it with a MK3 with no quibbles and great comms, brilliant customer service. It is chunky and very nice, just a shame I lost the GoPro/Exposure mount face plate as a result

Anyone want to buy a one ride old Unite 42.5mm with top cap and bolt? Bought it not wanting to miss rides and half expecting to do get told to do one by Burgtec, slightly prefer the looks of the Burgtec but nothing in it really. Unite is zero gap clamp as well where the Burgtec isn't

Shameful ad but I’ve got a good nick Turbine R for 35mm bars, 50mm length for sale if anyone’s interested…

@davosaurusrex

Stem looks nice. How does the top cap work? I have a 5mm spacer currently above stem. I can probably get away with that length stem.

Top cap sits flush on an internal lip, I'll try it with a spacer this evening

Should have asked - what colour is the stem and top cap?
