Hey all
I am considering using my chainring from 32T to 34T. The bike’s a Scott Spark RC Team running SRAM GX. Do I need to buy anything else of can I just change the chainring over and all will be wonderful?
Cheers

Your existing chain will work 32 to 34

Your existing chain might work.....but without seeing it it's hard to say.

Apologies for the slight hijack...
I'm just about to do the same, as currently I'm running out of high gears being mostly flat around where I live. chain should be long enough as I'm not anywhere near using the whole range.

Would going up to 34t from 32t be that noticeable?

Gear Calculator

At a cadence of 90 32 x 11 = 21.6mph 34 x 11 = 23mph

It's a 6.25% jump which is less than even the most closely spaced sprockets on a typical cassette. So probably noticeable but not a huge jump.

Some frame designs limit what size chainring can be used.

You need to make sure it's long enough to handle the largest sprocket through the full range of suspension travel. It's worth checking before you find out the hard way that it's too short.

Just out of interest what does happen?

I would assume its some of the below:

snapped chain
ripped off derailleur
bent hanger
bent swing arm
damaged shock

Also possible broken spokes and fubared wheel. Check twice.

Having done this yesterday I can confirm it's a barely noticeable difference. 34 was as big as I could go.

I have a 34t oval on my Spark, so 36 at the biggest extreme with it a few mm away from the chain stay - 36mm is Scott’s largest recommendation.

i changed that, cassette and chain due to wear - the process is to remove all the air from the shock and compress the suspension so it’s at max travel before sizing the chain.

Snapped chain, bent chainring.
