Hello,
I am making a MTB come back after a few years of road riding.
There seems to be many new standards appearing in the last 10 years and have been navigating carefully.
Building a new bike up, frame is on order, and I am trying to spec the finishing kit.
I was going to reuse some Renthal fatbars from my old MTB, but looking at them they are a little tatty and the stems i have are too long for the new build.
And I now discover 35mm is much more commonplace than I recall.
Is there any reason to buy 35mm over 31.8?
I assume slightly stiffer.
It's for an all round bike ridden up and down hills and over bike parks.
Weight isn't too much of a concern as I am large, but am consider Carbon for damping properties.
Tl;dr: does size of bar clamp matter with a trail bike?
35mm bars will really make the trails come alive.
Alternatively, they’ve been hanging about for years and don’t seem to have really taken off and (I gather) aren’t that much better; if anything, they’ll be stiffer than 31.8s. And the minimum stem length is a bit longer.
Don’t think bar clamp size is noticeable on any bike.
Personally I prefer the look of 35mm bars compared to 31mm so if you’ve got to buy a stem too then go with whichever you like better
31.8 is more than adequate, even at 800mm.
I'm running 35 mm carbon bars and they feel comfier than the similarly shaped alloy 31.8 jobbies on the E-MTB.
I can see 35 mm clamp alloy bars being pretty unforgiving though.
If you're into really wide bars (800mm) then I see the logic in 35mm due to the increased leverage.
So, if you're running carbon or really wide bars I'd go 35, otherwise, run whatever's easiest to get hold of. I do feel this standard is here to stay and I suspect that in another 5 year or so most high end MTB bars and stems will be 35mm, but 31.8 items will be available for a good while yet.
35mm stiffer, usually not in a good way. OneUp do a 35mm bar that's designed for comfort which is supposedly very good, but outside of that, I' stick with 31.8
They really don't feel any different - the biggest downside is your old light clamps don't fit on the middle of the bars. Otherwise, you pays your money and takes your choice.. whatever you like the look of.

The most vertically compliant combination is a 35mm bar and a 31.8 stem.
After trying RF 35mm bars I concluded that 35mm bars were shite.
I was convinced to try One up 35mm bars, they are much better.
If only somebody would produce a new standard somewhere between the two. Clearly there's a market.
Coke can shim in a 35mm stem and gaffer tape up an old 25.4mm set of bars.
33mm deathcombo.
I'm in.
Vibration damping whilst reducing flex, dethbeard's a genius.

Hold on to your panties I have the answer to your prayers

Da Bar has also been designed to a 33mm diameter in order to drop the stiffmess and allow for the sleeve to slide into our 35mm clamp diameter of Da Stem
They had me at da "stiffmess".
I hadn’t even noticed that but i think we’ve all been there😀
I’m running 35mm bars at 810mm with a nice wide stem and they are great.
I found 31.8 bars a bit noodley at 800mm.
Are you stout by any chance? 😀
Noodly! Funniest post since Geex left 😂
Ok, I've ran 35 for a few years now.
Go 31.8 op.
35 looks better (imo) on an mtb BUT you have less choice in stem and bar and again imo pretty much zero gains other than "looks".
Just my opinion mind you.😁
On One and Cotic stick at 31. Cy considers 35 too stiff
I don’t know what size I’ve got on my MTB. They just feel like bars.
