I foolishly gambled on a set of the narrowest PDW guards for my winter bike, having read they would "just" fit over a set of 25mm tyres.

My 25mm tyres measure 27mm across and just holding the guard up to the tyre shows barely any overlap.

So before I spend an afternoon in the garage butchering them with a Dremmel to fit, is there any point? Am confident I can set them up rub free but not sure how much overlap you really need to be effective.

Alternative is another flappy but effective set of Bluemels (which also require butchering, Specialized were really stretching the truth when they said the new Allez had clearance 🙄)

Depends on the tyre. Some measure more like ~26mm and should/could be fine. I use 30mm guards with true 25mm tyres on one bike and they're bob on. I would have said true 28's or fat 28's would be a bit tight and you'll get a decent amount of fling escaping round the edges or rubbing (or both).

I've fitted similar. The honest answer as that keep 95% of the water and slop off you but when you're going thru a puddle or it's chucking it down you're feet will def get a spraying. My bum tends to stay dry tho!

Ok, can live with that! My feet tend to get a spraying as anyway through big in puddles so no great change there 😎
