fitted a 34 instead of a 30 chainring. how much longer chain is needed.

A whole link (two halves) for every four extra teeth on the chainring.

But if your chain was at the lower limit of linknumberage, you will need to put in an extra pair of links for 2 teeth biggerness.

Or you might not need any extra linkage for a 2 tooth increase.

I did the exact same swap last week and didn't touch the chain. Shifts fine.

I went from 32 to 30 and it shifts fine.

I changed from 30 round to 32 oval without altering the chain. No problems for 6 months so far.
