Resurecting a hardtail that's currently 3 x 9 rapid rise shimano deore and would ideally like to make it 1 x 10. What's the cheapest way to achieve this?
Wheels are mavic crossride and not sure if they will do 10 speed though think if it takes 9 speed then the same freewheel will take 10?

Yep, the cassette will fit. You'll need shifter, cassette, mech and chain ring. Replace the middle ring on your current crank with narrow wide one and Bob's your uncle.

Don't think your current mech will work 10spd, but someone might correct me.

6mm offset on the chainring if it's not boost rear wheel. 3mm if it is.

Why bother going 10 speed?

Just get a wide range 9 speed cassette, Sunrace or similar and you'll get similar gear range.

My narrow wide ring rarely drops a chain too.

Will need a 'goat link' or similar for your mech hanger to allow for bigger cassette.

I would of though most bits of your 9 speed are pretty old and worn out so might as well change out the whole lot (chain, cassette, shifter, derailleur, chain ring). The cranks may be able to be reused if the chain rings can be removed.

Any gear system wears togeather (chain, cassette, rings) and really don’t like bit changed out to run a mix of old and new so don’t go buying second hand bits.

I don’t think there will be much price difference between 10 speed and 11 speed so well worth checking cost and it would be easier to get spares. As others have said all 10/11 speed shimano cassettes will work on your wheels with all 10 speed sram and only the low end 11 speed sram.

most 11 speed cassettes should fit, so don't bother with 10 speed. there's a spacer on the hub that you'll need to remove, but otherwise should go straight on. (there are some SRAM and Shimano road hubs where this won't work)

get a new mech with a clutch, and swap the middle ring for a narrow/wide.

I agree that 11 speed would be better but if cost is an issue you can pick up a used 10 speed mech and shifter very cheaply.

If you want cheap, 2x9 is probably the way to go.

Cheap steel cassette

Steel 36 tooth front ring

Steel 26 tooth granny ring
