Who is trying for this year? not seen any mention on here yet .I will be trying to plod round aiming for the sub 5 hour ride that I never achieve and sitting here having had a knee op may not be fit enough to achieve this year either!
Didn't get in 🙁
Fek em' 😆
Aiming for next year.. 😮
Have fun. 😛
Entries still being taken until the 10th June .They pick the field after entries close
I have entered, last done in 2009 and I have not ridden a great deal since until March this year.
Trying again this year.
No luck last year so hopefully!
Max
Still considering an entry.
Did my best ever time last year though so do I really want to go back, fail to beat it and be disappointed?!
Think it'll be my 7th if I get an entry.
Will be my 8th if I get in ,failed to finish the first time so 6 completions so far
If you say that you expect to take 6hrs, will they just tell you to do one?
Thinking of floating an entry in but might be a bit aspirational at this point in time.
No you have a chance its good fun at the back ,full of jokers and pisstakers just hoping to get each other round .I take between 5.30 and 6.30 usually
Anyone else ? it`s very quiet about this year regarding who is going for it ?
Mrs kilo is putting in for it. I am most definitely not
Entry has gone in, I did it a couple of years ago.
picking up a new (to me) disc CX so the descent of Pen y Gent shouldn't be quite so traumatic 😉
Fingers crossed
Entry in, last year was my first, can't wait to give it another bash now I know what to expect. Absolutely loved it.
Entry in. Some demon's to avenge after an epic series of mechanicals last year... Still my time proved that aiming to do it in 4hrs is realistic.
Here's hoping. Got my entry in, missed out last year. Hoping for 4 hours too..
Will be putting an entry in.
Wanted to do it the last 3 years but between Pneumonia and broken wrists I havent been able to do it as yet 🙁
I've just completed my entry, and it says a fee of £53. However I have not gone to a payment screen.
Do you only pay if they select you for entry?
Ta

Yes, if you're in they email you with a link to the payment page and you then have about a week to process the payment. If you don't make the payment, you forfeit your place and they offer it to a reserve. Or at least, that's how they've run it in the past, I assume it's the same this year (having still not bothered to go and enter myself!)
Well thats it entries closed last night and now the wait to see if Im in !! I dont know why I do it as Im crap and cant even get under 5 hours but am hoping to be there for the 8th time .
Well just had an email confirming I'm in 😯
Need to up the training some what.
Trying to do a 30 mile ish hilly road ride in the week, an off road hill rep session in the week, a 50-100 mile road ride at the weekend + short 4-5 mile runs when I can, which will change to bike carrying up a steep hill runs in a month or so.
Is this ok, any better stuff I should be doing?
Mrs Kilo is in as well, cue a mild bit of swearing at me for putting her name down for this 😀
Following on from my last post, where's good to stay in the area? Will be travelling up from London.
ta
Camping, B&B or hotel?
There's a campsite in Horton just up the road from the start.
There's accommodation in Settle, Austwick which are a short ride from the start. We're just down the road in the Skipton area so haven't had need to use any. The Game Cock in Austwick might be a good shout, pub in small village just off the main A65.
How close do you want to be to Horton and how nice do you want it to be?
Mrs kilo doesn't do camping at the best of times, so hotel, she would probably prefer nicer quieter end of market, I'll be driving her around so prbably looking at under an hours drive distance wise. A quick look at google suggests skipton might be a good base
If you want top end of the market then The Angel at Hetton would fit the bill.
Corporate/wedding style hotel - Coniston Cold Hotel
A lot of pubs that do B&B.
One of those things that when asked "what do you recommend?" is hard to answer but "what's X like?" is much easier. Do a search and ask about individual establishments.
In. And unlike previous years currently have no overseas work planned so not much to hinder my training. No excuses!
Looks like I am in this year also after a failed attempt last year!
Gulp!!!
Better step up the training!
Thanks,
Max
Skipton is not really on the doorstep.
I'd say Coniston Hall or Woop Hall worth a look, however I have no experience of either.
Kirkby Lonsdale is a nice little town, Woop Hall just outside the town. Not too far from Windemere if your up for a couple of days.
Empty inbox this morning 🙁
So should I wait for the reserve list to come out ?
Chinthurst B&B at Skipton is loverly. Decent hotel standard rooms - good breakfasts. Don't rate any of the other Skipton hotels. There is a premier inn at Gargrave though if that's your bag.
40 mins from Horton though.
I`m in again will be staying in the YSS caving hut at the start ,you could use the Hotel Paradiso bunk house or camp in the field at the start .The Helwith pub is next door and does good food
Not in 🙁
Most fun I had on a bike last year. Gutted.
Hope the drop out rate is high
Nowt on email for me so I guess I don't have to find my running shoes at least!
Over £100 a night B&B ?£6 each in the caving hut we spent £72 for the week last year ,standards may be different though .We had a great cheap holiday though
Anywhere around Ingleton is under 30 mins. Even Kendal is under an hour. Leave time to find parking in Helwith Bridge though.
What's the deal with the dropbar rule, is that the same for any CX race?
No they make up their own rules as it's not under uci, bc, tli whatever rules.
I rode flat bars one year - you were allowed for a couple of years (and drops 2 or 3 times). The flats had to be 500mm or some such.
Drops are easier, faster, better...
You wouldn't like my risers then....
Not on the peaks you would be DQed
In. Yaassss!
Now for convincing Mrs Tyred that driving in the support convoy will be a fun way for her to spend the day. She's feeling guilty that she didn't come and help me at 10 under the Ben yesterday, so now's the time to mount the campaign. Anyone successfully got their OH to do this and what's to expect for a support car?
I reckon that there will be a few riders (roadie types especially) that won't take up their option of a place when they see item 17 in this years Regulations & Instructions:
17. Any rider may be subject to a drugs control test.
😉
+1 to what Boxelder says - an hour can get you a long way from Helwith Bridge (that may be a good thing 😛 ) - we typically take an hour from the Skipton area to get to the M6 at J36 (the Kendal exit) and that's in traffic and travelling at a legal speed.
One hotel that hasn't been mentioned yet is Hipping Hall at Cowan Bridge which is just before Kirkby Lonsdale.
If you feel adventurous there's always the Simonstone Hotel - as recommended by Jeremy Clarkson!
I seem to be in the waiting list. I don't suppose anyone knows if there's a realistic chance of getting in?
Not sure whether to totally write it off for this year or cling on to the slim chance a spot may come up.
Err, a thread about the Three Peaks Cyclocross and no one's mentioned tyres and pressures?
Land Cruisers
65psi
65 psi?
I thought most guys were running 80 psi plus?
Thinking of running Racing Ralphs on Crest 29ers.
Dunno what pressure yet?
What did Paul Oldham and the Hope crew run last year?
Doubt many run tubeless because of the higher pressure?
Thanks,
Max
cheers for the accomodation tips, will research them and order land cruisers!
Can you get Racing Ralphs skinny enough for regs? Land Cruisers if dry, CX Pro if persisting rain my choices.
What did Paul Oldham and the Hope crew run last year?
He didn't race last year, but either way.... Rob usually uses the Hope Hoops mtb wheels, Crest 29er rims with Racing Ralph 35c tyres tubeless at around 55psi, ditto Paul, but they're both light enough to just about get away with them, although Rob punctured a couple of times last year and said he won't use tubeless again.
Myself and Dan being, er, bigger units, tend to need to make time up down hill so a bit more tyre is needed and run Land Cruisers with thick tubes at around 80psi on the Hope Tech XC rims. I have also tried Smart Sams but they're too thin a sidewall and got destroyed.
Don't worry about tread pattern, there's nothing much to get a grip on anyway so think puncture protection over everything else. Land Cruisers are crap and heavy, but have super thick sidewalls and a roll well once up to speed due to the central band on the tread. I've used them in the heaviest of rain up there and not come to much more grief than if I was using grippy tyres.
So if I've not received a mail by now then that means I'm not in?
Or do they send out rejection mails as well?
Blazin what width do you recommend on the Land Cruiser?
A few thoughts on the different parts of this thread ...
Tyres: I rode Landcruisers last year, but want something a little lighter for this year. I've had a recommendation to try Panaracer Cindercross from Dave Haygarth (awesome clincher and roll beautifully). That's what I'll be doing.
2tyredNow for convincing Mrs Tyred that driving in the support convoy will be a fun way for her to spend the day.
I'm not convinced it looks much fun being in a support team. From talking to some people it's very stressful, and getting a bit out of hand. There's so many people with mobile support and it's getting a bit busy, as well as dangerous in places. Personally, I don't see the need for mobile support, except for the elite riders. Last year my wife and kids were positioned on PyG with some food and water. For your average rider that's all you really need IMO.
Personally, I don't see the need for mobile support,
I was talking to the organisers last year, trying to explain the virtues of it being an unsupported event...obviously I didnt have much impact 😆
IMO would be better, and say more about the skill of the rider if it was self supported in terms of kit.
Would also stop the idiotic driving race that goes on.
i think the support comes from the cross/roadie side of its culture and wont go away. There are some close passes between ribblehead and penyghent. Annoying when they are clearly all cyclists/supporters of cyclists driving.
i saw a team supported by cargo bikes last year. Big dutch, low loader front types. they were great. they can come again
What was apparent to me with the Tour de France and to a lesser extent Tour de Yorkshire is big road events require a lot of petroleum to run, with a lot of crazy driving (support vehicles overtaking on blind bends etc) I don’t think I want Mrs foo and the kids involved in that, but I know a few competitors so might be able to pool resources, though I'll have a camelbak for fluids & gear and just the one bike!
Funky - 35mm is maximum permitted, so use that in as wide a rim as you can.
Re support, I've ridden start to finish on the same bike every year, unless you count the year I finished 3rd and did the last 3 miles on a small child's cross bike with minimal brakes having been offered it on the road run in when I had a double flat!
One of those things that when asked "what do you recommend?" is hard to answer but "what's X like?" is much easier. Do a search and ask about individual establishments.
Anybody know the Falcon Manor in Settle?
