Last week in July, she is off in Ibiza so I've booked some time off work. Thursday I will do Llandegla on the way over from Leeds, so I have Fri-Sat-Sun to fill. Bunkhouse booked in Betws-y-Coed.

I'll be on my own so I'm thinking trail centres more so than lobbing myself down any remote mountain sides - where do we recommend? I guess one day should be dedicated to Coed-y-Brenin doing as much there as possible, and I remember Penmachno being awesome too.

Any must do's? Any riding definitely worth doing in the area that's not follow the arrow stuff?

I do fancy some riding on the coast (for fish, chips & ice cream!) too if anyone has any recommendations, I seem to recall there's some nice steady cycle path type rides over towards Porthmadog/Barmouth.

I could easily do one of the trail centres in the AM and a long gentle ride along the beach in the afternoon.

Oh and if anyone wants a riding buddy 28th/29th/30th august, shout up!

We've just had a weekend over there and we did penmachno on Saturday and it was really wet, hub deep puddles in places and a lot of loop two is very overgrown. It used to be my favourite 'trail centre' but after moving on to Coed y Brenin on sunday I'd rather ride there. Its about 5 years since I've been but its really good for a blast. The old Marin trail can be reached riding from Betws over the narrow bridge by the river, track the river upstream on the road then up a bloody steep singletrack road will fetch you onto the trail. The new bits that have been put in are pretty good but its a bit climby if that's not your thing.

Cheers all, I'll maybe avoid Penmachno depending on the weather in the run up.

The Marin trail (now called Gwydir Mawr/bach) has had some work done and it's last descent is one of the best trail centre descents I've ridden, definitely worth riding in my opinion.

Coed y brenin in the morning, drive to dolgellau and park. Then down the mawddach trail- old railway track to barmouth over the bridge for ice cream. On the way back stop at the pub at penmaenpool.

Followed by a day at antur stiniog or Marin trail at betws.

I know you said trail centres, but...
🙂

Drum mountain from Abergwyngregyn.

If you can get there early, ignore the first carpark and follow the narrow road up to the top one if you want to save a, er, sporting road climb warm up.

Haven't got a guide but loads on line and it's a pretty obvious way up on Google Maps.
On the way back down, go straight on at the wooden signpost to Llanfairfechan.
It's a great ride, the views on a clear day are amazing, there are wild horses up there and hardly anyone else midweek.

Not massively tech but fast and flowing, a proper earned descent and bit addictive on sunny days.
Weather always a bit nicer near the coast and Llanberis is just up the road if Snowdon appeals.

+1 for the Gwydir forest / Marin trail centre, you can ride in up the forest road from Betws and might even find some tasty off-piste stuff on the return leg.
