As above, thinking of a long weekend in October for a solo trip...ideas? Am looking to get "out there" moreso than Capital trail for instance (as I imagine it at least).

Perthshire, West Highlands (take in some of the WHW, although it is familiar). Can leave work at 4pm and catch a train, am reasonably fit and will have lights.

Train to Blair Atholl. Pitch up overnight (I can give you an idea where) then two days round the Cairngorms Outer loop?

Complete outer loop is around 200km. Three days should be comfortable, especially if you omit the Fealar Lodge diversion.

Provisions in/near Aviemore, Tomintoul, Braemar.

The Capital Trail feels surprisingly "out there" despite its proximity to lots of settlements. Even the bits through Edinburgh didn't feel that urban. Leith did!

However ..., as Colin says - the Cairngorm outer loop, either the outer loop of the ITT route or the more traditional "classic" Cairngorms loop which follows much of the same ground. See the Scottish Wild Trails guidebook from Vertebrate for the latter, there's GPX files for the CL loop if you search, pretty sure it's downloadable from the Cairngorms Loop website. I'd recommend following the inner loop from Feshie Bridge through Rothiemurchus Forest to Ryvoan Bothy then cut back out to join the outer loop in Nethy Forest - avoids mostly road riding on the outer loop.

There's also the Wild About Argyll trail - the full loop starting and finishing in Helensburgh might be a bit much for three days at this time of year but it's a really convoluted route so you can skip loops out if you don't want to do them. Get the train to Tarbet or Oban and work out a loop from either of those. We did a 48hr trip on it (afternoon, full day, morning) from the car park beneath The Cobbler a couple of Easters ago.

Just googled it, looks perfect.

But 300miles in 56hrs WTF I just don't see that as fun...yet.

And the outer loop is only 200km.

Let me know if you want a gpx file etc. I can make sure you get the best bits.

Jimmy did the outer a couple of weeks ago, but on a gravel bike.

Was just about to pitch in and Col said it - did the outer loop 2 weeks ago.

Was tough on the gravel bike but doable. 3 days two nights from / to Blair Athol. Very enjoyable.

Cheers. Would a B+ bike be overkill then? Is enough of it technical enough to be fun?
