DTSwiss XM1650 wheels... 2 years old. 82kg. Wheels generally on the ground, but quite rocky stuff.
Broken spoke last week in Verbier, which was fixed.
Then this morning 2 more spokes broken at the thread.
Was planning to get all the spokes replaced but was wondering if a stronger rim would help?
(PS, although I am a shit jumper, I have been doing some jumping this week)
Last day in Serfaus... do i get a rebuild or just splash out on a hideously expensive alps wheel?
just replace for now but i`d say the spokes are toast and a rebuild/new rim are needed once you have the time.
once spokes start going you`ll find the imbalances in the wheel mean the others start to go too.
i had a wheel like this and after replacing a few after previous rides i once did 5 on a commute to work. couldnt believe the wheel still held. it felt like i had a flat!
Just get all the spokes replaced IMO.
It's fatigue - they'll all start going now. Slightly odd to see it at the thread rather than the elbow, but I guess it depends on the spoke.
A more rigid rim will help as it will spread the load across more spokes, reducing the magnitude of the load cycle per spoke and hence reducing fatigue, but it's probably secondary. I'd consider thicker spokes first, something like https://www.spokesfromryan.com/product/sapim-e-strong-12-13g-single-butted-silver-j-bend/
interesting thread - my rear wheel (dt swiss hx1501) has just broken 3 spokes in fairly quick succession, all at the thread where they screw into the nipple.
Was hoping not to have to get the wheel rebuilt - but if thats the concensus.....
Wheel has done ~1800 miles of fairly hard rocky riding .
did you true them up recently by any chance?
I gave the wheels on my dh bike (which were fairly old) a retension before a week in the alps. Blew 14 spokes at the thread without any really significant impacts. I assume I just went over the tension limit on some old spokes (despite only adding 1/2 a turn on average)
prior to that the wheel hadn't snapped a single spoke
The mountains are calling
The weather is hot.
The family is riding,
but I am not 🙁
Bike shop here doesn't have enough spokes to replace 28, so that's out. He can do 2 but that seems fairly pointless as they'll probably break when I go back out.
So I'll get the 1650 rebuilt when I'm back in Manc ( suggestions welcome)
I've got my spare lightweight wheels sat in the chalet that can use for XC in Germany next week.
The question is whether I should buy a new Enduro rear wheel Mail order from ze Germans to use for alps uplift only days...
If anyone has any recommendation fir a sturdy rear wheel then let me know. Much as I don't want to buy DTSwiss again*, I guess it'll make indexing and disk alignment easier.
EX 1700 or E1900
* not connected with these breakages.
I'd just keep riding it. Won't cause any significant issues until you're a good few spokes down, other than breaking more spokes that you're going to bin anyway..
He can do 2 but that seems fairly pointless as they’ll probably break when I go back out.
It'll probably last as long as you need it to, and it's better than having 3 missing?

Yeah, given that dilemma I'd get as many replaced as possible. There's probably enough material variation etc that the rest won't (well, might not) go this week.
