I'm currently running Deore 2x9, 22&36 upfront and 11-34 rear.
I'm thinking of going 2x10 as people seem to be banging on about it.
Is there really much advantage?
If so what is it?
And what will I need to convert my setup. I already have some bits which I've picked up such as chain and 2x10 shifters.

Thanks Nathan

2*10 is heavier

i cant see the point in 10 speed.

i cant see the point in 9 speed either really.

I found that switching to 2x10 with a 11-36 cassette gave me nearly the same spread of gears with less over lap o the gear inches, so more gears in practice. Also the difference between each gear is less of a jump so making the transition easier, which I found to be more beneficial when climbing. You can go onto Sheldon browns web site and use the gear inches calculator to find out any differences and overlaps. There are quite a few over laps when running a 9 speed system.

Shadow plus (or SRAM type 2, I guess?) is a good reason to upgrade if you're half thinking about it. It's lovely.

Other than that, the only real advantage is a (slightly) wider spread of gears if you go for an 11-36 cassette, this wider spread *might* enable you to go 1*10 which is significantly lighter, and neater IMO.

Standard 2x9 vs 2x10, both with the same spread cassette and without Shadow Plus, I wouldn't bother.

1x10 being significantly lighter is wrong.

its a bit lighter but not alot. the cassettes are heavy. there was a thread a few days ago where there was suprise at how little it saved.

and 1x9 will be even lighter still.

the clutch mechs do look very good though

It's just down to range of gears really and clutch mechs.

What you need: according to Shimano at least - shifters, mechs, chain, cassette, chain set!

But would I need everything Shimano says?
Is there any compatability between 9&10 speed gear?
I have already got mega 9 front rings, slx rear and xt front mechs and x7 2x10 shifters and a 10 speed chain.

My Anthem came with 3x10 gearing,it feels exactly the same as a 3x9 set up.. IMO it's nothing but a gimmick....
Also run a bike with 1x9,I won't be bothering to change it to 1x10...

If you go to Shimano 10 speed the pull ratio on the cable is supposed to work better than 9 speed when your cable gets grimey.
