Following on from a previous thread, I'm converting my sram X9 2x10 to a 1x10. I've just bought...

New 104BCD spider for the cranks
32t narrow-wide chainring from superstar
Chainring bolts
New chain + cassette (I needed these anyway)

Is there anything else I'm going to need - e.g. a stinger - or should I be OK with that lot?

I think you're forgetting how often you need the granny ring.

With my single ring set ups I've never used any other retention methods. Just the nw ring and a clutch mech. Not even sure you need a clutch one to be honest.

I've pretty much always dropped the chain when I forget to put the clutch on.

I'm about 90% sure my current mech is clutchless. I'll chance it and let you know how I get on.

I'm doing this so I have an excuse next time I get off and push.

hardtail or full suss?
My hardtail hardly needed any chain retention. Used a normal chain ring, non-clutch rear mech and just a front bash guard.
But the full sus needed narrow-wide chainring & clutch mech. Due to the chain growth on the full suspension.

Hardtail.

Not considered a bash guard. Guess I probably should.

I've tended to find that it's OK with a clutchless mech to start of with. However when the NW ring starts to wear it can't retain the chain effectively and starts to drop more often and it doesn't take long for the chain ring to wear.
