(Pic of Ceramic coated version I believe)
Hi all,
Currently (maybe not for long) a Cotic Solaris owner.
TBH I can't fault the Cotic, but feel it's time for a change.....
The QH looks just the ticket, but a couple of things concern me:
1) Weight (I would need an XL)
2) Will I be forever clattering my heels on the chainstays? - read it in a review, but they seemingly altered it for production?
3) Climbing ability
The bike will mainly be used for Trail Centre riding.
Planning on fitting 2015 140mm RS Pikes.
I had a Slim Jim (same geo, 27.2 seatpost). Climbs well. My heals didn't touch the chainstays (which they had done on a Canfield Nimble 9 v1).
I sold mine (too small) and would love another. 3 guys I have ridden with have now got one and I'm sure one of them will be along in a bit to comment.
I've had one for quite a while now and love the way it rides.
1. Not the lightest bike in the word but worth it for what I want to do on it.
(got fed up of light weight Ti stuff breaking on me)
2. I'm on a large at 6' and size ten feet and never catch my heels.
3. I can still climb the same stuff i climbed on the various different Ti frames that came before it.
It's very well made and I really don't think i'll break this one.
The 2Souls guys are easy to deal with.
It did have a 140 Rev on but it's now got a 150 34 on.

How do.
Former Solaris owner and new quarter horse owner (3 months) here.
I'm the newest owner of those I'm aware of (ssstu and candodavid to name two) and I can't really comment beyond initial impressions so far.
I owned my Solaris for over two years and got on very well with it. Like you say, there's nothing wrong with it. It's a competent, strong, adequately stiff, well mannered trail bike. I found I built mine into increasingly aggro configurations.
I ran it with a 120mm reba and the biggest tyres I could fit. Now, candodavid has a quarter horse and as one of my regular trail buddies I'd had the opportunity to watch him go from strength on it. I also got a chance to ride (dent) it a couple of times. It was a hoot, and just felt better.
Ultimately, I decided to move on the Solaris because I wanted to run a 140mm and a bigger tyre than I could on the Solaris. I also liked the extremely dropped top tube on the quarter horse.
So far, it's everything I wanted to be.
Weight. its a steel Hardtail. I think the large was 5.4lbs - the xl is going to be more. My total build with pikes, Hans damps, dropper and a 1*10 transmission is 29lbs.
I've not had heel rub problems at all.
Climbing - it's perfectly fine, but given its weight, it's never going to set any records. I'm still tweaking bar height - I like to take my time with these things, and at the moment it wanders a bit on the steep side of things because it's a tough to high. This is cockpit derived though.
You don't need a quarter horse for trail centres, I can't see it will offer you more than the Solaris would for that application, but it will still be a hoot. The Quarterhorse truly excels in natural tech.
Oh, and they don't do the ceramic coating anymore.
Natural tech. Ok.
it's a bit like aggressive xc. You weren't there man.
The real question is though:
How much more alive will the trail become on this bike?
I'll still whip your ass on my old school 26er, but I suppose you will be having more fun on the bigger wheels!
Do you need this frame?..... No
Does it look bloody ace?..... Yes
Will it make you any better?.... Maybe!
Should you buy it anyway?.... Yes
Thought about one - and when I was living in Germany it could have made sense - but the are impressively expensive for an HT frame ...
I bought a Solaris instead ( in fact, I bought two, but that is another story)
Quite simply the most capable hardtail I've ridden in 25 years of riding.
I've ridden Lake District passes, Dartmoor, Mendip, Quantock and a couple of Welsh trail centres.
When trais are fast and open it is incredibly stable, tight singletrack in the woods, no problem, but for me when it gets steep is where it really excels, the stand over allows you to really stay in control and manoeuvre the bike where you want it. The more technical the riding the better for me.
This is one frame that will not be sold....ever.
Shimano cranks don't need a convertor for BB92.
I don't have a QH, I have a Nimble 9, so in the same bracket ...

Ride bike, have fun, forget about it.

3) Climbing ability

Stand up. If it gets too bad, walk. Who cares.

My N9 was pretty hard work at Afan (The Wall), the trail being littered with embedded baby head rocks. High volume tyres help. My Yelli Screamy at BPW was ... a scream.
Planning on fitting 2015 140mm RS Pikes.
Good decision. I switched my N9 from 120mm Rebas to 140mm Pikes - many benefits, no downsides except for a few grams weight.
Ride it good! IMO a trailsy 29er HT is the must have bike in anyone's shed.

Leather wrap:
Or decals:
Quandary2)
Ceramic coated no longer available - even though I ordered the last one (long story)
So, do I stick with getting one powder coated the same colour, or go with something different? (Any RAL I want)
Quandary3)
Gloss or Matt finish?
Personally I think the decals are crud, which leave the leather, which, TBH suits my old man neaveu-retro pretensions.
Any ral colour was the hardest decision.
My preference is for understated and purposeful, so I went for matt. They warned me it would be difficult to clean. It's not too bad, but it holds onto a fine film of muck very well.
Ok, each to their own.
Must admit, I was swaying in favour of the decals.....
I'd imagine the leather wrap collects dirt (thus damaging the frame finish) & must deteriorate a fair bit getting wet & drying off time after time?
Love the matt blue in the pic above, but can see me going for the 'ceramic coat' colour - Matt or gloss, still not decided.
Got til the 7th January (when the powder coaters come back off holiday) to decide.....
My leather wrap has nice aged look to it now, I do treat it with mink oil now and then to preserve
To early to tell, but I guess it needs care like shoes do. I have some leather cream in the cupboard that I put on once in a while.
I ride with candodave and his leather has degraded a bit after the two years he's been riding it.
Does the seat clamp in the pic above come with the frame?
Yes. It's nice but a bit of a lump. Not exactly a light frame of course.
They do look awesome!
If I was buying one I'd go with a gloss powder coat and decals - the downtube of my bikes get horribly muddy and I'm not the greatest fan of cleaning, so I don't think the leather would last too well... Also, on the rare occasions I clean my matt black anodised Banshee it looks clean until it dries - and then it looks like I've only done half a job. When I clean my gloss orange Cotic even a very bad hosing down job makes it look nice and shiny.
Candodavid:
Could you post pics of your build please?
Leather wrap. No matter how you feel about it, that's part of how the QH is what it is.
I'll do images tonight for you
Bit late to the party, but I bought mine after a very quick spin on Candodavid's. It is a fantastic bike. Yes, its heavy but it feels really stiff/efficient for climbing as though every ounce of effort you put in goes in to propelling it forward. Great for Afan, BPW and general mucking about in the woods. Wish I could remember how to post pics on here.... best get a demo in with one of us owners... 😉
ADP who are you dealing with at 2 Souls, Marc is my contact and I am not getting much response to my emails?
Regards
Richard
had a SJ first and now QH...absolutely brilliant!
since fall marc is (neccessarily) very busy with his "other" job,
so it sometimes takes a while until he answers...would just try again..
in their german forum they have a thread just showing 2souls frames in different colours..

Mattjg:
You are correct in what you say re the leather wrap, think I will stick with that, cheers.
tricky dicky:
I'm dealing with Marc Donath, but have also exchanged a few emails with Reinhard Allwicher.
They have been good at getting back to my emails so far.
Are you like me & going to purchase or having an issue with a frame (if you don't mind me asking)
Anyone else wishing they hadn't clicked on the link posted by accu?
Them's some lovely looking frames.
It would take me literally weeks to choose a colour.
But it would be jagermeister orange.
ADP
No issue just looking to buy,but facing same issues as you, colour, etc
Should'nt have clicked on the link above some really nice looking bikes
They really do build up into an awesome bike, no bs, you won't be disappointed whatsoever
Got to be the Ti version of this if you can afford - 900 grams lighter!
Not 140mm ready though, and you really don't notice the weight
130mm compatible and you can use a angleset and still be in warranty
Can you get a 29er Shan?
some QH action pics from another thread in the 2souls forum...
(its not me...)
