Evening, can you help with this one...

After a second set of rims to make the "5" a bit more suited for dh than it is now. Currently running Mavic Crossmax tubeless, QR front and back in an XC type trim.

Obviously, dh tyres are different, do I need rims that are a certain width, or just get another set of Mavic rims with the same section?

Thanks...

I've found mavic rims to be pretty tough compared to other brands. But, alas, they are very narrow. If you're going to be running big tyres I'd look for something with at least 21mm internal width but preferably 23mm or more. Spank's new evo alloy rims are a similar material to mavic's and seem to be garnering a reputaion for been pretty mighty for their weight. I'd try the Oozy if you're light or the Subrosa or race 28 spike if you're not or riding rocky DH often.

If you're used to UST then I'd highly recommend Mavic ex823's. Really tough rim, though not massively light.

Mavic ex721's sound perfect unless you want to run tubeless - in which case stans flows could be a tough lighter weight option (they do ding a bit easier than the mavics though)

Stans Flow's well proven, they were designed for exactly this job. But I do agree mine are softer than my 721s. They don't seem less strong, but they pick up minor dings/bruises more often. OTOH it's wider and lighter than a 721, and tubeless ready.

(I think partly there's a temptation with tubeless to drop the pressures lower than you could with tubes, which leads to more dings- you'd get fed up flatting with tubes and put more air in!)

Sun ringle rims about 70% off at crc. Got 2 equalizer 31s in pimp winter camo for less than the price of one DT ex500 that needed replacing (same erd so a straightforward swap).

Subrosa or race 28 spike if you're not or riding rocky DH often.

i've got a Subrosa rim. it's now demoted to emergency duties. it's light, but it also dings easily and after five months of abuse it looked a little sad. a mechanic friend de-dinged it for me, but since then i've only used it for light duties when needed. the Sun Ringle MTX that replaced it have been top-notch (until a woman ran me over in her car).

this is freeride type stuff and the odd day in the park on a hardtail.
