looking to buy a DH bike for between 1 and 1.5k

Looking at an alu YT Tues, nukeproof, alu trek session, modraker summun or maybe a vitus domineer as new as I can get them

not bought a DH bike before so any advice on models to avoid or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated

cheers

james

Not any experience with any others in your list but you can't go far wrong with a Summum.

Awesome bikes and you see a lot of them on the uplift for good reason.

Cheers, do you know if the frame has been updated much between 2014 and now?

Would be concerned about the geo on a 2014 trail bike but I guess the summun from that period was ahead of its time

I have a tues al from 2016 and it rips, love it. Original wheels were destroyed fairly quickly (kore) and people have had probs with the original akros headset creaking. It has some unusual standards but yes I love it. So so stable in the air and just a rad bike to have. Look out for ones with a charger damper upgrade in the boxxer

I'd keep enough budget to replace bearings and service shocks, and would recommend checking very carefully for cracks to the frame and forks. If you aren't too fussed about it being 26" you can probably get a bargain with the advantage that replacement parts will be cheaper.

Of the bikes you mention I've had nukeproof and YT, my personal preference was the nukeproof although it was quite heavy. Mondraker seems popular and they are comparatively light.

Thanks all

going to have to be 27.5 because I want it to last a while

had a mondraker foxy a few years ago which I liked but it went through bearings quickly. Anyone know if the summun is the same?

I briefly had a 2012 Summum and it's still probably the fastest and smoothest riding bike I've owned, it was like a hot knife through butter. And quite a snappy pedaler too.

All those tiny bearings will be a concern but a DH bike dosen't get the same kind of use as a trail bike, so probably slightly less of a concern.

Or just get a Tues, they look pretty damn good for the money.

I had a quick look at pink bike for stuff in your price range and you can pretty much get almost any model you want. Saw a decent looking yt Tues for 1200. It was a 2017 model. Plus a 2017 session. You should have no problems getting something good.

They're all good choices. I expect the Nukeproof and YT will be well priced as YT didn't cost that much in the first place.

It's a DH bike so weight isn't that much of a worry.

Buy from a pussy not a pinner

with that sort of budget you could get anything you like over 2 years old

Excellent advice. Sometimes it seems like about half the bikes on PB are being sold by WC racers, so just bear that in mind.

😀

I had a YT Tues and it was mint. I'm 6'2" and a size large was a bit on the small side but the newer one is a bit bigger. Mine had Bos suspension, Hope everything, stacks of spare tyres and it would absolutely not sell for 1500 quid. I ended up taking 1100 and I haven't replaced it yet.

Just bear in mind DH bikes get used, abused and jet washed then thrown in the van. Check everywhere for cracks and look for crunchy headsets etc..

Definitely a good tip to buy from a mincer. Loads of people think they need a DH bike then realise they can't handle them or hate riding actual DH trails.

Cheers, already written off a few Bikes that look like they’ve had a hard life and/or been raced. Hoping to pick up barely used 2nd bike purchase that’s been gathering dust

looking like I’ll go for a YT tues, shame I didn’t get in on yours shark attack, sounded perfect!

was the Tues frame unchanged for the 2015/16/17 models? From what I can find on the net it just looks like a change in graphics

cheers

If a size small fits the bill then I have a barely used 2016 Scott gambler for sale - my teenage sons bike.

Buy one from where there is no local DH available. It may have only had a few days out a year then. Had a Nukeproof Pulse. Great downhill like a bulldozer with suspension.

Just to throw this in to the mix, have you considered a Saracen Myst? Loved mine when I had it and that was a 2012 one. Was fast everywhere and rode really well!

Great advice above, not much to add and sorry if it’s obvious-  but it’s always worth checking how often or not the fork and shock were serviced (if at all...), if they haven’t been serviced regularly you could knock the seller down a bit.
