I've never even sat on a 29'er never mind ridden one, but I just don't see how they can as good as they are often made out to be.
Surely they are hard work uphill with the additional weight & difficult on twisty singletrack with the extra length.
They are shit and the wheels explode. Trust me, I'm an expert.
I've got rid of a but one 26ers (just the shop and dog running local bike left)
5 x 29ers that a get used regularly for different riding and I love them all

My Niner is considerably lighter than any of the 26ers in my fleet. Sure, once you get to best of the best with the lightest components a 26er will be lighter but that's a serious amount of cash to get there!
I like mine for XC events or fast run outs but right enough don't find it quite as enjoyable on tight, twisty singletrack.
I have a singlespeed rigid 29er and a 140mm fs 26er.
The wheel size is not the biggest difference between the bikes.

well I've had a go on a few 29ers of different styles and have come to the conclusion that they're just bikes.....but slower, more crap in the tight stuff, weigh a ton and they are owned by dobbers. oh yeh and the zealots will bang on about 'em like bloomin telly evangelical nut jobs.

Rode a Specialized Epic 29 as part of my search for a new bike, I knew it was not what I was after, it was kind of a gap filler whilst I waited for another bike to be available to test. Loved it! Unbelievable mile eating climbing machine. Very comfortable and I made it to the top of steep climbs I've never beaten before. Not bad descending but nothing like what I was after, I knew this would be the case.
If I was looking for an XC bike then (on the basis of this ride) a 29" has to be considered; and I'd be surprised if it didn't win!
26" wheels are definitely best
35mm film cameras are best
Halogen lights with lead acid batteries are best
Inner tubes are best
Telegrams are best
Rod brakes are best
Vinyl is best
Video recorders are best
