I built some (Admittedly very bling) 29er wheels for a mate last night and they did seem a bit light, so I stuck them on the scales, 830g front, 980g rear. Is that pretty damned light or am I imagining it?

Quite light for 29er wheels I'd say, being as 29er rims and tyres and spokes generally are 10% or so heavier than their 26" equivalents.

What wheels were they? Can tell you my 29er wheels weigh a lot more than that, but then the rear hub is a shimano alfine though! Mind you, my front wheel (mavic tn719 on shimano XT hub) is probably heavier than your mates rear wheel...

It's not bad for an all-round wheelset...not really xc race weight (bonty race x lites, stans ZTR wheelsets etc are a couple of hundred grams lighter and there's crazy expensive carbon wheelsets out there a fair whack lighter again)

...but you certainly won't be blaming the wheels if you don't get to the top of a climb 😉

King hubs
Stans Arch (I think) Rims
DT Swiss Supercomp spokes
Black (Brass, alloy is crap) nipples

They are a really nice set of hoops... I wish they were mine, TBH 🙂

They'd be even lighter with Pro 2s!

The ZTR Race wheelset weighs 1370g, that's about the lightest that's still sensible, but they have weight and pressure limits.

It does strike me as another reason not to buy King hubs, that Hopes at 1/3 the price weigh less!

For the record, he already had the King hubs from a set of wheels he got for a silly cheap price. And they are the Pewter ones. Not my thing, to be fair, but they look fantastic.

Personally, I'd go for Royce hubs if I had the money.
