I keep thinking of getting a new bike but might just splash some cash on my current ride.
Was thinking of wheels first. Having never upgraded wheels would I notice a big difference? If so how much am I looking at spending to make it a worthwhile upgrade? New or used. Is say a £500 budget too low or not even worthwhile?
It’s a 2018 trek fuel running Boost Roam 30 Comp wheels and hubs.
Well your current wheels aren't exactly heavy at sub 1900g and they are a decent width. So the main benefit you'd get from upgrading is faster hub engagement as it seems those only have 26 points of engagement. But it sounds like you could just upgrade the freehub to the 4 pawl version to double it to 56.
You could spend 500 on new wheels and maybe save a couple of hundred grams but personally I'd just upgrade the freehub first if you can find one.
Edit: looks like they're only 21mm wide rims. In which case yes, get some new wheels and enjoy the benefits of wider rims and a faster freehub! 500 will be more than enough for a decent pair.
I love how stiff carbon wheels are in turns compared to alloys. Deffo a good upgrade ime
I lied they are line comp 30 not roam!
29 internal. 56 hub
Maybe the money is best spent on other bits instead.
Nukeproof Horizon v2 wheels. Just won best trail wheels in MBR magazine and have 102 points of engagement.
Hub engagement is a big upgrade when you go to a much bigger number from your existing hubs.
In which case you could save a few hundred grams by upgrading. Might help make it feel a bit livelier if it currently feels a bit sluggish.
You can buy 3 extra pawls and springs to fit to that hub so you have 108 points of engagement. I did it to mine when I had them and it was a really nice upgrade for little money.
Think it was about £30-£40 from them both (have to buy springs and pawls separately).
