Kill me know I am asking about tyres, but needs must...

1) Am I right in thinking I will get away with less knobbly tyres on a 29er than I would on a 26er, or is it hype?

2) Any online places with decent range of 29er rubber?

Usual suspects (CRC, Wiggle, Merlin) don't seem to (or don't make it easy to find), and Just Riding Along doesn't have much in stock.

Ideas welcome!

Stu - I got Ardents from CRC last year, actually need new ones as I can't seem to find whatever is causing all my punctures post thorny Spanish riding and I want rid of teh slime filled tubes! They seem to have done alright for me, but maybe I don't have enough of a rubber fettish for this discussion 🙂

More importantly - what 29er have you bought?

I ran a Maxxis Crossmark for most of the winter in the south of the Peak District and never found a lack of grip, don't know where is cheap though, mine were off the classifieds

1) yes, less knobbly tyres like a crossmark will cope with a wide range of conditions.
2) All Terrain Cycles have a good choice. Swinnertons in Stoke keep a good range of Bonty and Maxxis in.

Allterraincycles, tredz, pedalon, JE James, swinnerton cycles - I've bought from them all. Knobbles depends on the mud - same as 26". Bonty have been good for me over the years.

I run Ardents until it gets really muddy then I switch to Bonty Mud-X for the sloppy stuff.

I run mine as a single-speed though so need decent rear wheel grip when out of the saddle. Not sure a Crossmark would cut it based on running one on the back of my geared 26er hardtail.

I use Specialized Fast Traks.
There don't seem to be all that many Specialized dealers on line, so they may not show up if your just looking at Wiggle and CRC.

If you're going Schwalbe get the Snakeskin versions - they last forever. Next day tires had some 29er Ralphs in stock with Snakeskin. I'm sponsored by Schwalbe so usually get them from there, but due to demand on production bikes this year there might not be any more 29er Ralphs in the UK for a long while... So I ended up buying some from NDT.

Graham - how do you find the FastTraks? What's the weight of them / durability like?

I like them.
I run them at about 50psi on my Rohloff and find them ideal for trailquests. I'll be using them at Erlestoke 12 and Bristol Bike Fest etc. too.
I got a mystery sidewall puncture in one, probably from barbed wire. It was almost worn out anyway, so I replaced it with a second hand The Captain. It's a slightly different tread pattern, but apart from that I can't tell the difference.
I've got a pair of Continetal Race Kings on the singlespeed and find them very similar.

the new schwalbe pacestar tubeless ready 29er rubber is epic and the do a nic in a 2.3 and rocket rons are still under 550g for the 29er with decent sidewalls and can be run at about 20psi 😀

Bonty Jones ACX here, seem a good all rounder, Mountain Kings were useless.

Why on earth would 29er tyres have more grip?

Contact are is the same 🙄

Good point cynic al.
The contact patch may be the same area, but not the same shape.
I wonder if a slightly longer, slightly thinner contact area is better for the side loads of cornering ?
I doubt if it makes any real world difference and I have haven't noticed it myself, but maybe the theory is there.

surely for the same width of tyre the contact area will be just slightly longer, but the same width and therefore area will be bigger ?

I'm a recent convet to WTB Stouts 2.3. Amazing grip on any surface.
Wouldn't race with them though as they're a bit heavy but fantastic for trail centre mucking about.

I saw a couple of riders using SB8s at Wiggle Enduro 6.
I've thought about using them myself, so I asked what they thought of them.
They both seemed happy enough, so I might try them next time I need tyres.
I can't tell all the slight differences in the way tyres grip that other people claim to be able to.
I'll probably just go for Fast Traks, Race Kings or Small Block 8s, whatever's on offer at the time.
