Ideally thinking of a new frame.

Needs to be:
29er hardtail
short travel <120 mm
Modern Geo. (slack, long, low etc.)

sort of a on one summer season type thing. What is there?

I think you might struggle a bit with that, slack usually goes with longer travel than 120

Ah, missed the 29.

Last is 140mm, so not really short travel. And it's also not bloody here yet.

parkwood is too short. same ETT as inbred (less reach) so i kow it'll fit best with an 80-90 mm stem.

I think the last would be fine with 120mm. plenty slack enough & bb drop is only 50 mm, so would be 70ish with less travel. Any thoughts. it's certainly on the list.

I think it depends what you mean by long and slack, do you mean by today's standards or by last decade's standards?

Most of the ones listed above are normal by today's standards so I wouldn't really call them LLS.

Ragley Bigwig is 120/130/140, 65deg static at 130 so 65.5 at 120mm.

How long are you aiming for?

I run my Canfield Nimble 9 on 120 Revs if it helps. I think it's recommended for 120 - 140.

Whytes 29er series are relaxed, come with a 110mm forks... Stick a 120 up front & relax it a bit more, though difficult to find whyte's frame only (2016's are good if you want a really long TT)
Kona (old) Tora or new Honzo might be options to consider.

Fastforward has the drawback of the offset wheel. Not necessarily a problem but something to consider.

I'm experiencing quite a lot of HOW MUCH here 😆 Ragley, Swarf... and Last's exciting offer to sell you a Pike for 800 euros.

The medium's about 400mm of reach so yeah. I was thinking of sizing up to a large but even then it's pretty short. Shame really.

Dartmoor Primal is another one that could have been a contenda if they'd put an extra inch in the front triangle.

Can you get a Honzo frame only? Looks interesting, if still a bit short of wheelbase

Loving my scout 290 😀 how come you only want 120mm of travel ? fair enough if you already have a fork, but the 130mm forks on the scout feel spot on and give a bit of insurance for my clumsiness 😆

I want to like the Last FF but the rear dropouts put me off, I would have thought symmetrical, 142 and fixed not adjustable would have been and easier / preferred option for most.

No one seems totally sure on the Honzo availability, now they have 3 options its all a bit messy.

Scout with a +10mm headset, if you've already got 120mm forks? It's still not long in the reach though is it? I'm hoping to testride at the CRC demos but I think I'd need to go up to a large. Frankly I'd rather have the XL's reach.

Yeah. TBH, I'd have preferred if they just went 142...I'd even have preferred boost. But a slight offset on the wheel isn't a big issue for me.

I didn't realise till looking just now but it seems like to remove the rear wheel from the Last FF you have to also remove the rear mech.

No - you remove axle from NDS, and the mech and hanger stay in place.

In classic On One style the geo sheet on the Titus puts the Reach longer than the ETT.

The Ragley big wig isn't particularly long either.

Rides nicely too although I'm coming to it after 18 months of exclusively fat bike riding so feels "different"

It's a 20" & I'm running a 50mm stem & 130mm forks, might go 60mm but going to try it as it is for a while

Interested in jumping on on this discussion a little bit.

I've currently got a charge Cooker 2, upgraded with a few not that spectacular bits but debating a Parkwood frame to replace it at my daily HT.

My main worry is that my current forks are old 2011 REBA 29's, 9mm QR and straight steerer. Which at 100mm i feel could almost be doing the frame a dis-service and holding it back from being a fun bike it could be.

Obviously to swap forks makes mine a little more complex a plan. I've also got an insanely expensive headset in the Charge frame which would be a shame to lose, but of course i can get a spacer for the lower which converts it to straight 1 1/8th steerer instead of tapered lower

ediT : WTF ? No bottle mounts ?

TBH it feels a bit like "hardcore" 29er hardtails are falling behind the full sussers, even from the same manufacturers- look at a Nukeproof Scout vs the Mega 29er frinstance. Not everything translates from FS to HT but reach certainly does, and wheelbase too imo. Maybe it's just me having drunk the longbike koolaid but just about everything I look at, I'd want to size up to a large and even then they're usually not as long as I'd want.

Add into this some high prices and it makes me kind of want to just send a custom titanium place a copy of my trailfox's geometry, and say "here's a bag of money, adapt it a bit for sag, make it 2 degrees slacker and make sure a 3 inch b+ tyre fits in it". The last is pure luxury but the rest, well, the bike I want doesn't really seem to exist.

I can see a Scout happening as a compromise, though. It's not exactly what I want but at least it's not actually shorter than my 2010 hardtail, as many are

When I looked into it it was far cheaper to get custom ti in China than custom steel in the UK. Would probably be about 750 though there are a few UK lot who'll charge you twice that for the pleasure.

Just spotted the new Genesis High Latitude, pretty much spot on geometry for a 29er HT IMO...

I'd have thought the Last wasn't far off that - reach is 10mm shorter, but with HT sag you'd gain a bit. HA is 3* slacker, not 2, but seat angle, chainstays all in the right ballpark, and it take a 3" tyre.

It's the offset wheel 🙁 Everything else looks pretty damn fine but I want to hop bits back and forth between bikes.

That Genesis looks good. No wheelbase numbers? It's not slack but it seems to have a normal headset so should be angleable

True. A 142 and ditching the singlespeed would have suited better.

I think they mostly decided to go with the dropout/axle from their dirt jump bike for cost reasons, and if the bike sells, they may update it, maybe to boost.

I'm not a wheel swapper, so was happy to nab a cheap frame for what was supposed to be a cheap build, but has turned into five months of component shopping for a frame I don't have yet.

Not feeling much love for the Genesis, seems fairly modern day average to me.

Accepting you'll have to fit an angleset from day one just seems wrong.

I guess looking at running 140 forks means it's not really short travel

Genesis sizing is great. That looks promising.

Love my parkwood but it's not that long and was really keen on a bigwig but it's same size toptube/reach as parkwood I think. For the money though the parkwood is ace

Partly that and partly I've read it all wrong. The medium reach would suit me with a 30mm stem and give me a smidgen more adjustment on the seat post.

I'd have maybe liked to see a slightly steeper seat and slightly slacker head angle as I'm on 74.5 / 67 already but I'm a picky bugger
