Just rode my 29er in anger today for the first time on the trails, is it me or a 29er thing that the gears either feel like i am just spinning along almost feeling too slow or too hard if i go up all this is compared to my 26 inch bike. Gearing i think is 11-34 rear and standard triple up front. Just something i need to get used to or am i being too sensitive about it. Anyone else had this thought?.

Well the gearing is obviously going to be taller for the same sprockets/chain rings 26 Vs 29

It'll just take a period of adjustment that's all. Don't worry about it.

What gearing do you have on the bike?

I felt the same, stuck on a closer ratio on the back and dropped the front down as well, now 11-32 and 20-32 up front.

10% larger rolling radius on the tyres, so your gearing is now 10% taller.

Can fit a larger cassette if it worries you that much. Or just ride everywhere one gear easier than you would do on a 26" bike as 10% is usually about the jump in between 2 sprockets on a cassette roughly.

Nae need for all dem gears man!

11-36, 34T ring - job done.

Simpler, neater and less to go wrong......

🙂

the bigger wheel does accentuate gaps between gears.

I can feel the difference on a 36T ring, dunno about a triple... probably made worse by the larger cassette.

you'll probably not notice after a few rides.
