Hi,
I am looking to try a 2x10 set up on a 29er.

I run 11/32 with a triple on my 26 wheeled bike ( 44/32/22 ).How does
this calculate / compare to a 29er using a 2x10 set up ?
Is it best to go full out 11/36 ? The frame will only allow for a 40T front ring max.

Thanks.

Can't help with personal experience. I went 11/34 on my 29er and then put the same on my 26er but I am old, fat and likely to start walking if it gets any steeper.

There is a blog on Competitive cyclist here that I suspect gives you some of the information you are looking for and this blog gives you some results from the Sheldon Brown gear calculator done to try and address the same question.

Not sure if the latter has also taken into account the difference from 26er to 29er

29er riders will always suffer with taller low gears than an equally equipped 26” bike. In real terms, an 11-12% jump in gear inches equates roughly to a 4 tooth difference on the big side of the cassette.

There are also a couple of relatively recent posts on twentynineinches.com about gearing IIRC.

Using Sheldon Brown's gear calculator a 22/32/44 chainset with 170mm cranks and 26" wheels with 2.125 tyres gives a gear range of 17.8-103.8 inches.

Using a 22/36 crank and a 12-36 cassette on 29inch - 700x56 tyres gives 17.8 to 87.4 inches. around 12% of the high gear.

If you need the top end then using a 11-36 cassette gives 17.8 - 116 inches though with bigger gaps somewhere in the range.

Personally I'd go for the 12-36. You are losing just about 1 top end gear compared to your current setup. But I suppose it depends if you spin or push at the top end. If you spin out in top with your current gears go 11-36, if you don't go 12-36.

I was 11/34 on 26er, 11/36 on 29er. Felt about the same, albeit bit quicker flat out on the big wheeler.
